Thats another option I had not considered . Although I am trying to keep it low budget , that is certainly worth some thought .

Thanks mmbongo . I know you did some alterations on your Brute . Was it soap bars you put in it I forget now ? What did it cost you ?

Post Script: Just for fun I thought I'd mention my Brute has a hand written serial number B0089, if I remember right your Brute is pretty close in serial number . Kinda like brothers . lol :cool:

Nope, no black JJX PG's here :( sorry!

You'll probably need to have one made, as the JJX style is not in production anymore. Or, learn some quick woodworking skills and make your own. It might be a fun project!

Yeah I transformed my Brute (#84 I think it was) into a dual humbucker. But a while back I put it back to J/MM and sold it. Still have this pickguard if anybody wants to tackle a project :)

Thankyou for checking for me Ds1 , I appreciate you taking the time to try and find one for me . I have the woodworking skills and could also make one out of plastic or a metal like aluminum . I also have a couple of options with Pickguard Heaven. Just have to sum up my options and make a choice .

I have also run a wanted ad on here , so I am going to give that a little time to see if anything crops up .

Thankyou mmbongo I'll keep your pickguard in mind . Do you still have the pickups you used with that pickguard? Would you be interested in selling the pickguard and pickups together? I might consider that also .

You could also mount a set of Jazz pickups in those covers...or P-bass pickups. You could mount jazz pickups slanted like Warwick :)

What I really wanted to do was get some Nordstrand Big Splits and drill out the holes for the pole pieces but I think that kind of precision work is beyond my capabilities. Man that would look cool though!

That would look really cool . It would take some fussy drilling to get it just right but it would be sharp.

Upgrade option guys. While at the shop I heard Kevin Walker's new Rainbow Bass. It had Aggie Dual Coil Soap Bars with a Bart NTMB Pre and it was killin.

If anyone is looking for a new Brute contact Donovan Bankhead at Fretspot.com. I heard he bought all of the Brutes at NAMM. I bought my Single Cut from him. He's a really nice guy to work with and he makes deals. So pass the word.

Hey guys, I think I'm pulling the trigger on a MJX-5 this week.
Anyway, without running thru this whole thread can someone give me a quick rundown of what drop in replacement pickups that are that are available? Sorry, I haven't been able to find where anyone mentions the size or shape number of the pickups so I'm not sure what to look for.

I've seen some of you using Delano and Bartolini skimming the thread but I'd kinda like to stay away from Barts, they usually sound too dark to me.

Barts are a drop in. Not sure why you'd say they are dark sounding though.

I had a Warwick Dolphin 5 & a Lakland 55-94 Classic both with Bart MM style pickups and they seemed dark and a bit lifeless.... at least compared to my Stingray 5's.

I prefered soloing the MM on the MJX-5 but it sounded a bit dark though maybe it was the preamp. I felt like I had to cut bass to get the clarity I was after. Just curious of my options.

Do you have any experience with the Bart vs stock Brute pickup, particularly the MM pickup? If it's a bit brighter and more open than maybe it would be fine.

Sorry, I've been playing single coil J pickups for so long I'm totally out of the loop on everything else.

Here's some measurements to help you out.

The MM is the "Long" style with dimensions of: Length = 117mm / 4.60", that's to the outer edge of the ears (Delano, and maybe some other manufacturers, don't include the ears when measured - 105mm / 4.14"), and Width = 48mm / 1.90".

The J pickup is: 91mm /3.60".

Yeah the Bart CB's are definitely cleaner and brighter. If you look up above at my dual humbucker Brute, those are Bart MK5 CB's. I'm selling that pickguard if you want something totally custom that nobody else has :)

Nordstrand and SGD also makes drop in replacements.
