Brubaker Brute Club, Part 2

Wow, I hope to get up to Delaware for a lesson. My schedule is kind of hectic also. I work in IT as a Unix Administrator and I am on call most of the time. I am a care taker for wife too and it can be a challenge managing my time.

After much thought and careful consideration I am going to upgrade my stock MJX-5. This is my favorite bass to play so I did a lot of back and forth. And the winning combo (for now) is a custom J/MM set of RJ NEO Pups. I am going to pair that combo with a Nordy 3 Band Pre. Since my KXB-5 will have the Bart Package that's already one bass with that. I'll add a coil splitter as well. It will be a three way north coil/parallel or series/south coil. Haven't decided on P vs S. My Single cut is in the shop having the 3 way coil split sorted out. This is north/series/south. Depending on how it sounds will decide P or S for the MJX-5. When I upgrade the single cut I'll choose another option as well to have three different sounding Brubakers. I'm leaning toward a Delano package for that. However if the Neos sound good I may get another set of Neos and run a Delano pre.

Guys, Brubaker KXB-5 Custom Build update Pics. My bass has moved into the Assembly Stage. S/B picking it up from the shop in the near future. Bart Quads, NTMB Pre, Coil Splitter. Hipshot HW. A slap machine.

Hey yall! I hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving!! Quick question:

I searched but couldn't find it, does anyone have a current wiring diagram for the Brute J/MM w/coil split switch? I getting ready to replace the preamp and want to make sure I keep the current MM pup wiring config. What's confusing me is the separate green and shield wires that are soldered to the blend pot circuit board. I'm assuming green is the output and shield is the ground, in which case I would connect to the blend pot and ground network respectively. But I wanted to be sure.

I'm installing an Audere 3-band pre, for kicks. Also, I have missed having a mid control, and the current pre's volume pot doesn't really taper, it's either on and loud, or off lol. In church that can be a problem lol.

Anyways, any help is greatly appreciated!!

Hey guys, quick question:

Has anyone ever installed an Audere 3-band pre in there J/MM Brute w/coil split switch? I'm having some problems and can't figure out which wires go where. Basically I have the shields from both pickups connected to the Green on White cable coming from A/P switch. Also connected to this green wire is the black wire from the MM pup.

The White wire from the J pup is connected to the Black on White cable, also from the A/P switch.

The Green wire from the MM pup is connected to the Blue on White cable from the A/P switch

I have left a White wire from the MM Pup, but I'm not sure where it goes.

Also, there's a red cable coming from the coil split switch that was initially connected to a ground point at the bottom of the bass knob from the original Brute pre. Right now I've connected it to the cavity ground wire and the Grey on White wire that's going to the output jack.

I'm thoroughly confused:help::help::help::help:

Any help is greatly appreciated, especially since there are no Brute wiring diagrams out there that I can find. Thanks to Kevin Brubaker and PhillyBass for the 3-way switch diagrams, I've decided to start over if I need to. Thanks in advance to everyone else!

Maybe try sending some pics to the Audere guy(s)? Post some pics in the Repair forum?

Well here's a starting point, as that's definitely not right. You should not have any wires connected directly from the bridge pickup to the preamp. They all have to go through the mini-toggle switch (unless you don't want to use that function).

The bridge is wired to the mini switch, then the output from the mini switch will connect to the blue on white wire. The ground from both pickups then connect to the green on white common wire.

I've just acquired a Brute JJX-5. White with green pick guard. I seemed to also scored with an Aguilar obp-3 pre inside. The pickups don't have any markings, so I guess they may have been the originals. The serial number is B-00050. So far I love the bass. The neck is smooth and fast, and has a low action which I like. The only thing I'm not sure about is the aggressive tone. I'm coming from a BTB with bartolini soapbars. I'm thinking of changing out the pre, which I think is reason for the aggression, and also the pickups.
I need suggestions. What has worked for you guys that have done upgrades? I'm looking for a warmer modern tone, but in a jazz, maybe with a passive/active switch. Am I looking at a different bass or can this be found made with the Brute? Thanks!

The Aggy pre is about the most versatile pre-amp ever made, IMO. I would say its the pickups. The "original" ones like you have are quite aggressive, as the bass is supposed to have "that" modern tone.

My suggestion would be a pair of Aguilar J's. I've been loving them recently - plus they have a couple different cool windings. And obviously they will sound good with the OBP-3, too.
