Yeah I know. Just from my experience on TB I never indicate that I like something better than anything else especially since tone and a persons financial siutation are very subjective things. I leave that to the the gear gods and know it alls. I can remember being shot down for liking something and cats were all over me. I didn't take it too seriously but they certainly did. So now I refrain. What's better a Bass Mods JB or a Lakland Skyline JB? I don't know LOL!!!! One thing for sure with the intial options you'll get your pups and pre a lot sooner. And I am not hinting at anything. I too have communicated with SGD and was going to put some of their pups and pre in one of my basses and ended up selling that bass. I've done the same with Reed James which is another option. He has a vid out on youtube where they took an import lakland and put his J/MM combo in there and it sounded good.

Modding my brute:

Bart NTMB 9/18v, vol w/active, passive, pan, bass/treb stack, mid with push/pull freq, hipshot tuners.. Might paint the headstock... Hmmmm... So far I ran into a snag with the preamp (its new), so I'm going back into it this evening to see where I made the mistake... Here we goooo!

Wow, that's a lot of routing. You'd figure these would be a lot lighter with all that wood gone.

Yeah, chambered bodies usually have more hollowed-out space. Not trying to clog up the thread.

If I didn't have a nagging shoulder/neck pain, I'd swoop me a Brute. I always liked the look and like the feel of them - and the new finishes and electronics look really nice.

I was mainly just a little amazed at the swimming pool routes. Minor thing, but to me the pickguard feels different on top of a route as opposed to solid wood. Very minor thing.

Also, if anybody wants the baddest Brute on the planet, I have my custom HH pickguard for sale for $100. I wanted to make it available only to the Brute Squad members first.

It seems that not all Brutes are the same, but for mine I had to do two things for the neck pickup to fit.

1) I had to route a little bit of wood, you can see the tracing in my neck joint picture above.

2) There are two neck bolts in the way. They will need to be removed and cut a little shorter so they don't stick up.

Here's the pickguard on my bass, it has a 5th knob hole now.

Im not sure as im the third owner of this bass. I believe somewhere on tb the original owner had a adjustment done on it and they didnt give him the piece back. Didnt know there was supposed to be something there until you posted yours. Hmmm I wonder how I could get a replacement?

Well I think that little piece you see screwed in there is just for looks once you have the pickguard back on. You don't have to take it off to get to the truss rod.

But I don't even see the slot to get to the truss rod on yours...camera angle hiding it maybe?

Thanks Thumpy Fenda 5. Kevin Johnson (Managing Editor) of No Trebel heard me play at an event and that's how it happened. I had no idea of who he was and that he was paying any attention to me. He liked the way I played an even took pics of me playing. All of this was a real surprise. I had no idea I was even in there until a friend called and told me.

@ jmain. I live in Delaware. My work with Michelle is seasonal and most of my gigs are freelance or fill in. I can't committ as much these days as my wife is disabled and I am the primary caregiver. If things were different mane I'd be out on tour somewhere :-)

If you're ever in the DC area, let me know. Sorry about your wife and big ups to you maning up and taking care of things. I know you'd be out there doing it, but we have to make the right choices. Keep doing your thang.

I have a wife, dayjob and about to be 3 yr old. I'm grateful to play in church and haven't played outside the church (gospel sets aside) in years. My home studio doesn't get enough time either. But I'm blessed and good with it.

I really wanted to get one of the new Brutes, but I need something around 8 - 8.5 lbs for my busted up shoulder/neck. But those new Brutes, including the SC, look and sound fantastic. I played an older one and really dug it. I'll keep my eyes open for a featherweight.

On Sep 15th I was at Dares Beach MD for an event, and in June I was in Fredericksburg and gave a Slap Bass Clinic for the Virginia Bass Forum. A friend of mine in Woodbridge is going to invite me to one of his shows and invite me onstage to have a Funky Slap Fest and go at each other (friendly head cuttin session) I'll let you know when that happens. His name is Chris and they call him Big New York. His Band is called Groove Skool. They have a CD out and it's nice. The new Brutes are awesome. Mine are older but I still love to play on them. I have a USA KXB-5 in build and can't wait until it's done.
