Brubaker Brute Club, Part 2

Update on the Dunlop Super Brights. I just spoke to the folks at Dunlop. .130 B's are available right now as singles for the Super Brights. They are working right now on different gauged sets. Give em a try!!! They are in stock now at Bass Strings online. If you want your local store to stock them let me know, Dunlop will make it happen.

In a similar vein, I slapped on a set of the new Flex Steels from D'Addario. I had the standard set with a .130 B string. They actually channel the DR Fat Beams to me, with a little more brightness/bite to them. They come in steel (obviously) or in softer nickel. They are also low tension like the Fat Beams, the best way I can describe how they feel is soft! String bends are a cinch with these strings. They sound nice and bright to me, though we'll see how they stand up after a few weeks of playing. Right now I'm digging them so much I put them on my Peavey Cirrus 6 too!

Hey just thought I'd chime in here again. I stopped by the Brubaker Guitars shop in Maryland a few weekends ago to meet Brad so he could check out the action/neck on my Brute. I didn't know the shop is closed on Saturdays, but Kevin Brubaker was there with another gentleman, Sonny, who was picking up his bass. I mentioned to Kevin why I was there and he offered to take a look at my bass.

Basically, I couldn't get the action low enough to be comfortable without really annoying fret buzz between the 12th and 14th frets on my D and G strings. Kevin looked at the neck, then pulls out various tools and proceeds to adjust my bass for me! I ended up leaving the bass with him for a few days. I returned to the shop to pick up my bass.....it plays like butter. It gets about as low as I like for the Brute to be, with very minor fret buzz. Turns out there was minor fretwork to be done, and Kevin knocked it out! Playing it now reminds me why I like the Brutes so much! And Kevin is an awesome guy, more than I can explain in short sentences! Brad's an awesome guy too....we sat and talked for hours about basses, gigging, life in general lol. I think I was at the shop for five hours lol! Nice to meet a straight forward guy that is also one of the best bassist you've ever heard. (Seriously, I'm gonna catch him with my phone one of these days!)

Not necessarily related to just the Brutes, but the customer services from the man whose name is on the guitar is the best I've ever experienced, and I can't wait to order my KXB-6 from him!!

I am running mine with LaBella White Tapes and it plays and sound freakin awesome. I roll the treble back with my blues band and the sound is big and fat. A gig where someone does not come up to me during a break raving about my tone is pretty rare.

When I turn the treble up while playing in my rock band, it comes very close to emulating rounds.

I don't know how it would sound with TI's or Chromes but with the White Tapes it is stellar.

awesome, thanks! was linking maybe the dr legends as a jumping in point... the brute will cop a pretty mean p tone so it seems like a good idea.

i'd be using that setup for modern country, which i've never played before...

Finally pulled the trigger on my new Brubaker Brute MJXSC - 5 from Jesse at The High Studio! I've been lusting after this single cut 5 string bass for some time - since I first laid eyes on it. It's the full matte black with custom "Hot Rod" pin stripping from Big John's Artwerk and a brown Brubaker gig bag. Modding with Bartolini p'ups and an Aguilar OBP-3 preamp, copper shielding in control cavity, silver Hipshot Ultralight machines, Hipshot type A chromed brass bridge, Hipshot silver knobs and DR Black Beauty 130 strings. Jesse at The High Studio has cut me a great deal and has been awesome to deal with. Top notch customer service! I can't wait to actually get my hands on it. Not only do I expect this to be my workhorse but intend it to be a forever bass passed on to my kids... My 13 year old daughter is as excited about it as I am as I will be teaching her to play on it in prep for her junior high jazz band. Anybody here running this same electronics setup? I'll be running through an Aguilar DB751 & Aguilar 810.

Haven't been here for awhile. I decided to put Reed James Neo J/MM set in my black MJX-5 with a Bart NTMB Pre (4.6 AP) I have the pre, have my tech lined up, and a videographer to document some things. Just waiting on my Pups. Tecamp USA will be conducting a Demo in Newark DE on Saturday 8/1/2014 at Jam 24/7 starting at 9:30am. They are encouraging all bassists and their bands to come to the event as the facility provides a stage and gear for your band to perform. Don't know for sure but they also may be conducting another Demo on Sunday the 3rd as well. Contact Glenn at Austin Bass Traders for more info. My face will be in the place

Played a BBQ/Jazz/R&B Event Saturday with FOH Support that was superb. They had had me sounding great. Took both of the ladies out for a spin. Tecamp Puma500 Bass head and a Horizon 2x10 sealed cab.

Did a recent trade for a MJX5. Didn't mean to get a bass but...It's great. Great shape with the newer pickups. The neck is super comfortable and playability is truly excellent. Might be one of the most comfortable fives I've played (maybe second to a Roscoe I had for a short time). I see now why people upgrade and love them so much.

Anyway the pickups are pretty noisy. Is that normal for the Brute branded pickups? I think the previous owner did some wiring so that may be the problem. I was just curious before I start digging in.

My two Brutes are quiet one is stock and the other is stock with the exception of a 3 way coil splitter for the MM Pup.

This is kind of Brute related as I will be using this with my Brutes. I ordered a Tecamp M212 Bass Cab today. Completes my Tecamp Puma 500/M212 Cab Rig. The Brutes sound excellent through Tecamp Bass Gear.

Cool. Thanks. Kind of what I was hoping for. The tone of the stock pickups seems pretty good. Thinking about maybe a three band pre. Possibly a Glockenklang?

I don't think Brutes are the only thing that sound good through Tecamp gear. ;)

Sweet! Nice one. For me, the neck feel is just about perfect. Just flat out comfortable. Doesn't hurt that I love the way it sounds too, ha!

History-wise, I don't know that yours is exactly "early." S/Ns were hand written and the pups didn't say "Brute" on them.
