To be honest it was an impulse swap. I normally play fairly narrowly spaced basses like the Ibby. I bought an MTD Heir 5 string not realizing it was 35" scale, which if you are a 34" fretless player can be a issue, so I put it on CL and contacted with the guy who owned the Brute. The width of the neck startled me, but the first time I played it I loved it. I play a lot of blues and jazz and it works surprisingly well for both genres, I just happen to be the oddity in a world of Fenders when I play at blues jams.

Count me in! Itook a chance and picked up a 5 string Brute in black. I changed out the white PG for a natural burst flamed maple PG. I'm very impressed with this bass. The quality, playability and tone far exceeds it's $650 price tag. Great bass!

I bought one of the last out of Kevin's shop and it didn't even have a hand written date on it. So I wrote my own. The date that I received it. It was Oct 19, 2011. It was a leftover first generation bass and he put 2nd generation pups in it before he shipped it. I am now upgrading mine with a Custom First production of it's kind Reed James J/MM set. They will be Vintage Vibe Noiseless BARs!!!!! Underneath the standard looking J/MM covers. Matching up with a Bart NTMB 4.6 AP pre.
As of 9pm EST tonight, I'm picking one up for $350 on Craigslist. I can't wait. These things sound excellent for the money. I've gotta slow down with the GAS impulse. My 3rd bass purchase in the last two months.
All I can say is WOW! I've played many basses over the years and this is the 4th in my current collection. Never would have I expected an import in this price range to play and sound this amazing. Only complaint is a slight buzz/humm when either PUP is soloed and the treble control is above flat. I will likely install an EMG BQC preamp and EMG active J's to address this and to add some mid control to this lovely beast. I didn't think I would find this kind of quality for under a grand. Nevermind the $350 that I scored it for. Brand new condition, perfect fit/finish, and set up is flawless. Plus, I just want to stare at her like I'm a creepy uncle at some college bar. I'm almost nervous that it will steal the thunder from my heavily modded USA Hamer Cruise 2TEK. That's been my baby since 96.

What kind of case do you recommend for a Brute?
Also, I've noticed a lot of Brutes the fretboard overhangs the actual neck on the G string side down towards the neck pocket. Any reason why the neck itself is just not wider down by the neck pocket to accommodate the wider fretboard? Or is this a manufacturing defect in some Brutes?

I recommend getting a decent gig bag and a SKB Bass safe. You'd be Golden to travel or go anywhere.

No the fretboard overhang is how they are designed, it's even that way on the top of the line Brubakers, my Brute had this also
Cool. They sure do play real nice. Sadly I need to sell my Brute. It's a sweet one for sure with Bartolini pickups and preamp. The MM pickup has a coil tap for single coil front, single coil back and full MM. Lots of tones... but alas.

Just got my Brute JJX-5 yesterday, hands down one of the best basses I've ever played. Pics soon (hopefully), can't stop playing it.
