I love my Lil G, and I'm convinced it was divine providence that led to my meeting Brad, Malcom, and Rick where I learned about it, in addition to playing like $600,000 worth of Brubakers:D. I've played the Lil G with Acoustic Image, Markbass, SWR, and now Genz Benz -I hope to play a Tecamp soon- and it performs wonderfully. It outperforms most of the 2x10's, 2x12's, and even 4x10's I've played (one exception is the Eden D410XLT, but that thing is like $1200 and weighs 80+lbs!!!). Strong lows, distinctive mids, and super-crisp highs, all while retaining clarity...and it handles 1200w @ 4ohms!

I'm running a PUMA 500 and can't wait to see what it sounds like with a LIL G and my Brute. I know at one time Malcolm was running his PUMA 900 with the LIL G. The video on youtube by Virgil001 souinds very good. He's running the LILG with a 15 bass cab underneath.

Hi gang. Long time lurker, first time poster.

I'm a drummer who merely pretends to play bass, but I'm at a point where I can justify and afford an upgrade from my abused Craigslist Squier P-Bass.

I'm looking for something under $500, and I mostly just play along with recordings in various styles. Mostly rock, but I love oldschool R&B/funk, so I may work up the nerve to try some slapping pretty soon here.

All that by way of background to this question:

I have a lead on a used Brubaker Brute JJX-4 in great shape, professionally set-up, with a gigbag, for $400. I played it for about five minutes today on my lunchbreak, and it was all I could do to walk out without reaching for my wallet. Felt great, sounded great (admitedly through a much better amp than my PoS Crate:hmm:).

A cursory bit of internet research suggests that $400 is a good price for this bass in this condition, but I figured I would check with y'all on that. I sure have learned a lot from this forum over the past few months...appreciate all the wisdom collected under one virtual roof here.

Hey guys in case you didn't know already:

bassonthebroadband.com The first bass centric online radio station in the world. More jazz centered but they still play all kinds of bass heavy music. AND you can submit your original music for airplay if the production is good enough. I listen all the time now. I submitted one of my cuts but I doubt the production is professional enough. Hey Brute players. One more viable pickup and pre upgrade solution for the Brute MJX configs would be the Hanson LH3 System. It nails the JB and MM sounds. I'm willing to bet it would sound awesome in a Brute. Lakland is installing these in the 55-94's and 55-02's. Of course the Bartolini option is still available.

IMO they do sound great espcially with a nice set of strings. However I believe the concept of the bass was to provide an easy platform for pickup and pre upgrades. I debate with myself all the time if I should upgrade or keep stock. In reality for the type of gigs I do, no one would be able to tell but me or another gear head. For now I'm keeping my money in my pocket. There are some killer combos out there that work well with Brutes. My candidiates are Bart PUPS and pre, Hanson LH3 system, Reed James pickups and Aggie OBP3, Delano PUPs with glock pre. And don't forget that Nordstrand is an option as well, and then there is EMG. Gives me a headache when I think about the possibilites. For now I'm cool with the stock pre, and PUPs and DR Highbeams. For my new single cut I am addind a coil splitter for the MM pickup. Once I hear that, I'll probably do the same to my MJX5 before upgrading electronics.

Now that I have had a few minutes to think about this, this is how I'm going to approach it. My next goal besides a Glasstone LIL G is my own custom made boutique bass. If I upgraded the electronics in my Brutes that would easily be close to 1k. Instead of investing my money that way I'm going to take that 1k and put it towards my custom build. While the Brutes are nice basses for the money, they do not compare to Kevins Custom basses. 1k will put me close to 1/3 of the way to Nirvana :-)

I remembered watching a demo of the Lakland 55-02 with the LH3 system. However, I doubt that the Lakland pickups can fit into the brutes. I hope I could nail the JB, PB and MM sounds on my brute but I'm not sure what pickups can achieve that.

They should fit. Not sure about the Jazz pickup, but the MM Bridge pickup is 'Lakland' sized, which is a longer version of the standard MM pickup.

The Lakland 55-02 LH3 pickups would be a direct/drop-in replacement for a MJX-5. The Brute takes sizes: MM= 4.6" or 117mm, and J pup= 3.6" or 91mm.

Yup if you understand some of the history behind the Brute for the MJX-5, what fits the lakland 55-02, 55-94 fits the MJX-5. THe Hanson System is a viable upgrade option for the MJX-5. The Bart solution still being offered for the 55-02 and 55-94 is still an option for the MJX-5 as well. In the demo the Hanson System sounded pretty damn good.

Yeah!!!! I just heard my Brute SC is being packed today for shipment to the dealer. My wait is just about over. Went with the Tobacco Burst. I went from merlot, to natural, to Tobacco. Quite the journey.
