While we're on the subject of pickguards, does anybody know how much the custom pickguards cost?
The website says its $250.
New request Brute club. I want some black tuning pegs and a black bridge. Me being completely new at this is asking for suggestion. Found some cheap tuners on eBay from china but Im a firm believer that you get what you pay for. But I could be wrong anybody every use these? I found some more expensive ones but $100 for a set of tuners seems a bit much but then again I dont know much so all the help (not sarcasm and criticism) would be helpful.
I wanted to get them powder coated but another TB'er who does it told me that the heat would jack up the sealed tuners... Painting is an option but i think its very tacky(if not done right)!!!

Carvin tuners should also work, but they only sell them in 4 packs. I plan to get these tuners, since you can buy however many you need, and the orientation you need (2+3 headstocks are pretty rare).

I WANT Hipshot Ultralites or Gotoh Res-O-Lites but they cost quite a bit more. I think Res-O-Lites would look so much better because the tuning key matches the shape of the headstock.
I also suggest converting it to string through body while you're at it. At least do the B string if nothing else. You can get the ferrules from Carvin as well.

That was recorded straight from the board into my laptop. I enhanced it just a hair to add a little bit of 'air' to the sound, but not much. It sounded just a little flat at first.
Hey I bought everything Carvin... I had to send back the Tuners because they sent me 4 inline rathter than 2x2 and i did buy the one extra. Now for the question! There is a wire under my bridge i'm assuming this is a ground wire... Should i be sanding down the bottom of the bridge so that it touches the raw metal.... I'm not sure if its paint or if the bridge was powder coated. I got it last night and did a quick inspection just to make sure everything was there... any words of wisdom. I'd hate to put it together to find out something as simple as paint between a wire and the bridge causes issues... Thanks!!!

Yeah just sand down a little area where the wire touches and you'll be fine. Definitely post some pictures when you get done! How much did Carvin charge for the extra tuner?
It cost $15 extra. I ordered it Friday it was here monday.... and with their $9 dollar shipping on any amount of accessories i say go for it... Then again their not really loosing anything because they are putting the items in USPS flat rate boxes it maybe cost them $6 to send it but factor in packaging and handling then i guess $9 is resonable for 3 items...

So what is everyone using for strings, i tried the black beauties and am less than impressed, the bass just has this sort of hollow sound going on now. through an amp it is okay but acoustically it is leaving me less than happy..
Black Beauties are the best string I've tried on the Brute yet, but I have not put Sunbeams on it as of yet. But they are anything but hollow. They are very warm and punchy and feel soooooo good!

Um...it's "okay" through an amp? Do you mean "okay" as in "less than completely satisfactory but merely okay" or "okay" as in "it sounds just fine though an amp" and all of your dissatisfaction is with the unamplified sound?
I know people say that the unamplified sound is "the real test," but, seriously, it's an electric bass. You wouldn't ever be using its unamplfied sound for any real purpose, would you?
In reality the acoustic tone will come through either way ,there has always been a debate over tonewoods ,I have always liked the maple neck and fingerboard it is usually tight and focused , and I have usually liked ash for a body wood as this gives a nice depth to the tone and sustain , but these basses are made out of NATO I think ,dont quote me on that . I have tried a couple sets of strings now and am probably try a set of slinky's before I give up hope.the playability is great and I can't find any fault with the bass other than a simply what I would call a hollow tone
I have been comparing the tone to my Warwick jazzman 5 and my TBC JT 500 . My TBC has a clarity and depth that my Warwick doesn't even have ,it has a real piano like ring and clarity to it and a b string that is so focused I can't even believe it myself being 34 " scale .I have been tempted to drop in a different preamp and pickups , cause to me the stock ones aren't cutting it for me . Or do I just want to let it go and get another TBC and be done ,don't get me wrong this bass is a real player . But I don't know if I want to drop a bunch of money into it in the hopes it will sound as good as my TBC . The stock preamp to me is real hot almost to an overload point, but then again I haven't pulled the pickgaurd to see if there is any kind of an output adjustment, so maybe I should do that next.
And the body is a Chinese wood called NATO it is supposed to be like a maple, I read that in a bassplayer magazine review, I just double checked , and basswood is lighter.

My Brute is a 5, the Streamer a 4, and I now have a killer arsenal that delivers my tone no matter which I'm playing. The Streamer does play just a hair better, which is quite a compliment to the Brute, which I have about $600 in even after the pickup and preamp upgrade.

So mmbongo . I have a set of bartolini 59j1 and have still not thrown them in yet ,I have just not wanted to do it based on the acoustic tone of the bass, but if I do it , I am going to go full on with the bartolini 4.6ap preamp and if I go that far I night as well drill it for string ferrules and string through body. Should I go for it??
Definitely go for it. Just listen to both of my sound clips, they speak for themselves. I have the EMG BTS preamp (cheaper and has mid sweep control) but the Bart will sound great too. I'm thinking my Barts are also 59j1's.
I did the string through ferrule thing for my B string only. It didn't make a difference in the sound or feel, but it sure helped with the Black Beauty strings, because before that some of the outermost wrap was going around the post.
