mmbongo - still waiting to see some pics, and maybe sound samples too, of your upgraded Brute. From what I've read on here you didn't use the guard I mailed you . . . also, do I remember reading somewhere that you went with a little different then stock pup placement? (IDK - maybe that was something else entirely)

Looks pretty good! Will that pickguard add $250 to the price, though?

Have you guys experimented with making some Brute bodies out of ash? I'd love to have an ash body for mine with a trans orange finish and a pearloid pickguard :)

The doubleburst would include the pickguard, that's the second burst in the "double", the other burst being the body. The price is still in flux. Obviously trying to keep these affordable.

We talked about an Ash body for a couple of different models. Trying to get whatever is coming next worked out in time for Winter NAMM. You might be on your own for the trans orange finish though. I think that's a great color, probably be more popular than red;)

a2z, I'll PM you some more details, but here's basically what I'm doing:

Originally I installed Bartolini 59JS pickups (with an EMG preamp) in my JJX Brute. While they sound great for single coils, I just really missed that fat grunt that you get from that MM humbucker. Plus the B string was...well....weak.

So, I decided to covert it over to an MJX since all it required was a pickguard and a pickup. Easier said than done! As you can see, I looked for a pickguard for about 6 months. While Kevin's custom guards are phenomenal, I just couldn't justify a $250 pickguard on a bass I paid $300 for :) For whatever reason, Kevin could never get any plastic guards to sell.

Long story short, I ended up with 2 pickguards, one new and one used. Once Kevin got setup with a distributor, pickguards were available. So, now I have a J/MM setup in my Brute.

I opted for SGD pickups over Barts, because like I told David at SGD....."I want to tear peoples faces off!" He made me a Neo MM pickup for the bridge, and a Neo jazzbucker for the neck.

I love the SGD pickups Dave made for me. I didn't even want a neck pickup because I never use them, I hate the sound of them. I planned on just using the MM pickup in series 100% of the time. But I'm anal about things and I wanted a matching SGD neck pickup, so I ordered the Neo Jazzbucker.

These things kill. These are the first pickups where I get to be...what I consider...useable tones out of the neck pickup. I don't use it alone, but the Jazzbucker combined with the MM pickup switched to singe coil sounds exactly like my buddy's Stingray 5.

Using the MM pickup alone and in series is where I get my 'tear peoples faces off' sounds. It's just huge. Parallel mode is also useable, still fat, but just brighter and less output.

The SGD's really brought the B string to life as well. I expected a difference, but not this much.

I'll post some pictures and sound clips when this project is done. It's holding at about 90% now, I have a few more parts to get to finish it up.

Brainstorming on a new Brute model, unofficially called a doubleburst...

Thoughts? Also looking at a singlecut Brute but need to keep it different from the custom US pieces. More on that later

Generally, conceptually, I like it a lot.

Like Darkstrike said though, there's some discord between the bursts. Logically, it doesn't seem like the body and guard shouldn't resolve at the same level of brightness because the guard has the center and center of the body's hypothetical center is covered, but still, something is off.

It could be the picture, or it could be the grain of the guard. With two burst, the difference in the woods seems highlighted.

I was going to hold out and wait for the singlecut brute to come out but it looks like I will have to opt to just get a MJX5 when they are back in stock. I had my JJX5 set up pretty well to my liking and it was just stolen this past weekend , when we were gigging in Utah nothing else was taken. it was in the back seat of my wagon i couldn't fit it in the very back so it was on the seat and I was in a resturant having breakfast, I still feel lucky though as my schroeder cab and GK MB500 were not taken . but I am really bummed out I had sold off pretty much every other bass i have to get the funds up for the singlecut brute when it comes out , now I am bruteless.

Man I hate to hear that.

However, did you see the one that a2zbassman has for sale? Custom pickguard, new pickups, new preamp....great price.

I'd gladly take that double burst if Kevin wants to slap it together to help a brother out. LOL. I know I can't get one through APINTL.com till sometime in october. I couldn't find the one for sale by a2zbassman

I already know how this is gonna turn out, i will end up getting one and then a little later i will see a new singlecut brute and have the worst case of GAS ever LOL, I wish I lived close to brubaker , but it is probably good that I don't because i would be over there on my knees begging to have one of the first single cuts available ....wish I could just afford a one of his cheaper high end ones .

That's awesome man! I tried my best to talk him out of that custom pickguard a while back!

He's a stand up dude, he helped me out with some other stuff for sure. Glad you guys worked out a deal!

So if you ever decide to sell that pickguard, you let me know :)

Allright, I promised pictures of my JJX to MJX conversion when I got it done, so here she is! Preamp is an EMG BTS, pickups are SGD Neo's. They don't look exciting, but man do they deliver the goods. I kinda miss those laser etched SGD logos though :)

I think I want a black bridge with chome saddles now :)
