Double Bass BSX Megathread

I am thinking of getting the Thomastic-Infeld Belcanto for the Allegro once I get it on the advice of this thread: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=433047
The Belcanto and the EP are ranked the same overall but I feel the Belcanto is better for my purposes because the EP is noted to be lacking in thumb position and harmonics which is very important to me right now as I am currently working on the Dragonetti. Let me know if you think the Belcanto would be a good choice on the Allegro.

Can't say as I've never played the Belcanto's or the EPs. I am not one of those guys who has expirimented with every strig (not sure how those guys who are, can afford that!)

I use an Azola Bug Bass II for my salsa group. It sounds fantastic, though not really comparable to a Baby Bass. Tony Banda used an Azola, I think, to record with Poncho Sanchez--so it does work for Latin jazz. I don't have any expierience with the Allegro basses.

thanks nickybass for the info. i do know that the azolas are great for this specific type of genre. i just got a great chance to score one of these bsx allegro basses but cant find much info in one being use in a salsa/latin jazz setting . i did contact dino from bsx about it and did tell me to use foam of some sort on the bridge. does anyone know what he is talking about? ....thanks

Using foam on the bridge will help mute the strings, I think that the strings should be the ones for that type of music. Strings with a lot less sustain and overtones. I know that there are string mutes you can buy. I have a a Allegro and you can get a very good salsa tone with the proper setup.

Ok...I've been seriously considering jumping into an EUB, and the Allegro has really caught my eye. I've been looking for a used 5 string with no luck, so I'm leaning towards placing an order with BSX. Has anyone ordered from them recently? What can I expect as far as wait time and communication? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My favorite bass is the Azola . I have owned A vintage Baby . Two upright acoustics that Steve built for me and An acoustic Bug .
I was in the process of having Steve create A new Acoustic Baby . But I was to late . The Azola's went out of business and then there were no more Azola acoustic Baby or any other Azola
So I went shopping for another bass that I could be happy with . I made contact with BSX and talked with Dino Not once but about 10 times . The communication is first rate . If you have questions Dino has the answers . I have never waited longer then my return Email to get A reply from Dino .
I did A lot of research and found that the BSX Allegro is A Quality Bass made in the USA. .After reading many reviews, all positive I ordered one . It should take 8 to 10 weeks for delivery . It comes with the neck detached . But according to Dino it is not A problem to assemble the pieces to make it playable . And if I have A problem Dino said to call him and he would walk me through it .
The total price was under $3000. including shipping and all the extras that I ordered . What A deal for A Quality Bass made in the good old USA .

Good to hear. How long ago did you place your order? I'm always cautious when doing business with a builder for the first time...TB is a great place to hear about other peoples experiences. Thanks!

Dino at BSX Bass is a top notch guy to work with. Yes I also purchased a bass from Steve Azola too. I would say that BSX's service is one of the best in the buisness. I got mine with in 4 weeks. I think he already had the body made and just had to paint it. I have a 5 string Allegro with a low B string. It comes with the neck not attached but taking care of that is a no brainer. The bass as many sonic adjustments at your fingertips. A small built in mixer so you can adjust string to string volume, it gives you more choices on what type of strings you want to use. It also has a 3 band e.q. built in. It will all be explaned in the manual you will get with bass. And Dino is there for anything you may have questions about. I was thinking about buying another bass from him.

Perhaps this has been answered before, but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for searching this thread,
namely....of all the strings spoken about and recommended here for the Allegro, are all/any of these standard 3/4 length, or are we talking half scale here??

I have Spiro Weich half scales on the Allegro now, but I wanted to try an old set of Labella 7710 black tape wounds, but the silk winding at the bridge end went over the bridge into the playing/bowing area. Not good.
Plus there is just too much string at the headstock end, although that can be trimmed a bit. I was told I could cut the silk at the bridge end and roll it back, but I gave up after a few swipes. It looks like it's very difficult to cut the silk without damaging the nylon winding underneath.
Any thoughts, helpful hints?? String models and lengths is what I'm looking for here, i.e. do you use Obligato half scale, etc, etc

I ended up putting a set of my favourite string - Innovation Silver Slaps - on my bass. They fit fine at the tailpiece end (i.e. no silk over the bridge), but I checked with Innovation before I fitted them, as they're 3/4 length and I was concerned they wouldn't wind around the string post.

Tony said I didn't need to worry, and indeed they went on and tuned up perfectly.

Dino at BSX recommends that the basses are fitted with 1/2 scale strings, but I guess some 3/4 will work depending on whether they can survive being wound around the string post or not.

Hope this helps
