Double Bass BSX Megathread

Hello.
Decided to show you my bass. This is the early BSX Allegro(made before 1997), solid body. :)
This is my main bass.

I have a BSX Allegro and it currently has Spirocore Weichs 1/2 size. It is a full 41 1/2" scale but Dino recommends using 1/2 size strings due to the short distances between the tailpiece and the bridge as well as the nut and tuners.

If I put Bel Cantos will there be an issue is the metal part of the string is winded on the tuner?

I had to cut off the ends of strings, no problems. I think this is a normal solution. But I am afraid to advise you to do so.

Received my BSX Allegro 4 string, and could not put in down. It sounds amazing, lots of growl, very even balance sound, tons of bottom-and all of that equals a sound to die for. I had a 1970 Patrick Marshall upright that I bought at World of Strings in Long Beach. I hurt my back and the big dog house was just too much for me to lug around. I did love the sound, and was hoping to find a smaller version with the upright sound. Found it! This bass passes as the "real" deal. My son says it sounds better than my Patrick Marshall. Everyone loves the appearance of the Allegro, I got the Sapphire Blue and it is a work of art to look at. I have small hands and Dino trimed the neck down so it plays like an electric. I always use Spirocore stings, and they sing on the Allegro. Dino is humble, helpful, knowlegeable and a kind quality Luthier of basses. I would recommend this bass to all players at every level. Called Dino, ordered it and got mine in 7 weeks. It was well worth the wait.:hyper:

Hi,

I got my first EUB (used) a couple of days ago, it is a BSX Allegro and I really like the sound, but I am wondering how this bass can sound with gut strings?, I have checked the price of these strings where I live (Oslo, Norway) and they are expensive! so before I experiment with these type of strings I would like to check if some of you TB'er are kind enough to upload samples sound of the Allegro with gut strings? or at least point me out in the right direction with a link or something like that?

I would apreciate any description of the sound as well.

I had one for a few years and absolutely loved it strung up with Velvet Garbos, IMO a fairly good substiture for real guts. They don't have all the subtle nuances of real guts, but for my purposes they have 90% of the tone and all of the tension that you want out of a real set of guts. In the mix they are very similar.

oh! so there is real guts and kind of fake guts? I really need to know more about EUB strings! but how they sound? deeper? richer?

Well, first of all, if that BSX Allegro is full sized, and I believe it is, then you'll most likely use the same strings as you would on a DB. As to the velvet garbos, they're silk core and wrapped in copper, so they have a very gutlike feel/sound IMO/IME.

I should've added that I did try Pirastro Olivs on my BSX and I didn't like it nearly as much as I did the Garbos.

Thanks for the info Elmon, and yes my allegro is the standard full size bass, I checked with Dino at BSX yesterday and he told me that my bass has D'adario helicore. Since I am just learning to play the EUB I will keep the Dadario for a little while and then try to experiment with other strings like the velvet or Thomastik..

I assume it's not the solid body Allegro?
I would think gut strings would be a waste on a solid body EUB but I don't know?

I have the D'adario helicore on my 5 string solid body and that fifth string is pretty thick. Can you even get gut in a B string?

I don't know if the gut strings will be a waste in a solid body, because I am a newbie in the EUB realm, but I was thinking if the gut strings can give a more round warmer woody sound to my allegro, that is what I was consulting with Elmon... but I will wait a little bit before I change the strings..

You can get a Gut B though I don't recommend it!! I had a five string set made for my URB by the Dan Gamut, and while that is hands down the best set of guts I've tried (EADG anyways), the B was for me unplayable past the low D. I'll sell it to you if you want to try it out!!!
