Double Bass BSX Megathread

Everything is in the title but let me clarify. I am working on a project with my BSX Allegro - 4 Strings Acoustic (hollow). I need a complete Neck including Fingerboard, Head and Machine Head.

If you have a Fingerboard only or hipshot Machine Head only, that would be also great.

I was thinking of the Eminence, but after reading posts here and checking out the BSX website, I think this might be a better choice and costs less. Am specifically looking at the BSX Allegro hollow body 4 string. Also saw it for sale at Musicians Friend. If I purchase there, need to confirm a gig bag is included.

Just one question: Is this model standard with a detachable neck?

I'm pretty sure the fingerboard is the same for all his full size fingerboards.
The problem with BSX is there are (or were) a lot of models and some were bass guitar size.
It may be cheaper to find an older solid body model and ditch the body.
Dino at BSX is a pretty talkative guy. Give him a call and ask about the older models. The web site is pretty old so it may also mention the older models that have DB fingerboards

I just got my 4string Allegro and I can report that the 5 string does have wider fingerboard from top to bottom. It also has a wider bridge that is designed for the 5 string.

You will need to be sure to get a 4string neck and bridge.

FYI the new hollow body has the knobs on the side and where they used to be is now an access panel.

It seems like the quality control has gotten worse at BSX
What do you guys think
Does this fingerboard wood look like the grain is a little large and rough (besides not being black)
And you'd think they'd have there cutting tools together enough to size the endpin screw so that it didn't stick out so far.

My bass is from 2004 and has a similar looking fingerboard. The end pin screw also sticks out a bit, albeit not as much as the example in your picture.

It's good to know my fingerboard isn't a dud.
I was comparing it to my old solid body 5 string which has a very nice smooth black fingerboard.
It's for sale and here and has some good pics to compare.

Also the nut on my new one is a little sloppy looking compared to the old 5 string too but it seems to work

I was just fooling around with the action.
Maybe it's my imagination but It seems like it goes out sometimes or just gets harder to play.
I should measure the distance from string to fingerboard to see if it stays .
For future reference(at the bottom of the fingerboard) it's 1/4" from fingerboard to the underside of the E string and 7/16ths on the G
After several times loosening the strings and adjusting I think it's better.

The strange thing is I noticed the Fingerboard leans over a bit in it's groove.
I guess this is normal? It looks like the 5 string does it too.

Can anyone comment on the BSX 2000 series 5-string vs. the T Bass 5? I prefer the idea of the hollow body (which I believe the 2000 had) over the solid, but I'm not real interested in a magnetic pickup. I'm certainly not going for an acoustic upright tone - I have a real upright for that and use it most of the time - but I am looking for more of a Rob Wasserman or Dave Pomeroy kind of electric upright sound, overall. I have a Rick Turner Electroline 5 fretless that is close to what I'm after, but I can't use a bow with it. Thoughts?

My Model 2000 4-string has 4 piezo sensors, no mag PU. It is hollow, but the hollow space is pretty spare. PM me for sound clips of arco and pizz if you want to hear some total hack playing...Link Removed

Thanks, @Passinwind. I ended up purchasing a Model 2000 5-string with the magnetic pickup and Bart 3-band. I decided I'll add piezo to it after I get it. After thinking about it a while, I also decided that the magnetic option was pretty cool since I want to use it where I might otherwise choose to use electric bass. I have no intention of replacing my upright for acoustic music, but I do intend to replace the acoustic upright for loud, effects-heavy rock.

The bass will be here in a few days; hopefully in time for my gigs with Eric McFadden at the end of next week...

Cool, hope you enjoy it as much as I have mine. I've done plenty of loud rock/trip hoppish gigs with EFX and arco sections and it worked great for that.

Please say hi to Dino and/or Rodney for me if the chance arises, really enjoyed hanging with both those guys.

I put it together and messed around with it for an hour or two. Adjusted the trim pots just a bit and string to string volume is great when playing pizz.

When I play arco the G string is incredibly loud, B and E are pretty good, A is a little more quiet and D is practically nonexistent. Can anyone help me with this or chime in if you have a similar issue?

Playing with the trim pots is risky business .
If you got the original set up directions when you bought it BSX does not recommend you play with the levels (inside the bass) that go directly to the pickups.

Call Dino at BSX , he's a nice guy (with an east coast edge)

okay, I'll do that... and I didn't do much with the trim pots, moved one slightly and realized it threw off the pizz volume then moved it back and that's it so I should be ok.
I'll call him today

Talked to Dino and he told me that for whatever reason it looks like the placement of the transducers was just right for pizz but maybe not for arco and the only way of addressing the issue would be to send it over and have him take the bridge apart and drill out the transducers. Oh well... not sure I'll end up going that route, I'll have to be happy not playing it arco for now. Thanks for the help bobsax

Hey folks, I'm thinking about buying an Allegro, but BSX says that the top is "spruce or pine." First, I don't think I've ever heard a bass with a pine top. But more important, if you order from a retailer, how do you know which wood you're getting? Can you order a spruce top specifically? Thanks.
