Double Bass BSX Megathread

Congrats on your Allegro!

I just got my a few months ago and am loving learning upright on it! I too ordered it from a long way away (it had already been ordered to a dealer in Perth, Aus, but the guy who ordered it didn't end up taking it, then I ended up buying it and getting it shipped to Sydney).

Are you new to uprights or just wanted an EUB? What finish & number of strings did you get?

Enjoy it!

Hey El Mon. I can't believe how great that BSX sounds with Velvet Garbo's. The tone actually reminds me of Scott Lafaro's tone quite a bit! What impresses me the most though, is that the amplified tone sounds just like a louder version of the unamplified tone. Pretty cool. Whenever I have tried to amplify my upright, it always sounded like crap. Now that Azola has gone out of the business, I guess my mental battle between Azola and BSX is over! Thanks for the vid, it really has shown me the light. How are the garbo's on tension? If they are anything like gut strings, I am sure they are quite light?

What do you think it would sound like with a walkabout? I think I remember you saying you had one of those at one time.

Don't know first hand, but I imagine it would sound fabulous. With the inherent warmth with clarity the Walkabout has, and factoring in it's tweakable EQ, I bet it would be quite the workhorse.

Thanks for the kind words. I've actually gone to Velvet Animas, and actually like them even better on this bass. The same round thump, ala guts but yet VERY different, but with more clarity and sustain on the bandstand. Same low tension that feels GREAT on either hand, and allows me to dig in a little bit more without fatigue. Definitely give Dino at BSX a call. Very affordable basses IMO when you consider the build quality, feel, and tone.

I would love to hear a clip or two of the bass with Animas on it. I like the tone of the garbo's so much I can't imagine the Animas being better. Animas and Garbos are a pretty big investment, and your clips really help! I fully intend on calling Dino when I get some funds. I had to sell my beloved upright last year, and haven't had an upright of any kind for over 6 months and I am thinking of adding a BSX first, and an acoustic upright later. I especially appreciated you unamplified clips, as I could see you you could rehears un amped with this bass.

Hi ElMon, thanks for those clips, you have changed my direction, I would like to know where did you get your 5 strings set of velvet animas.
Thanks again.

I actually ended up buying the Velvet Low B, which again is INCREDIBLE, directly from Nuno Alexandre after asking if it were even available. The string is made to go with either the Garbo or Anima set as I understand it. It IS pricy though. Round $150. I'm sure the retailers that Francois provided links for would also be a good source.

Okay so I've decided since I'm going off to college next year to buy a BSX Allegro because I can't bring my acoustic bass up with me. Now the question is should I take the upgrade to Spirocore strings or not take the upgrade and instead buy my own strings for the bass. Keep in mind that I'll mainly be doing solo work and orchestral playing. If anyone knows of reasonably priced strings that could help me get more of a classical sound out of the Allegro please let me know. Thanks!
