Double Bass Buckle up, It's going to be a bumpy ride

So, praise her!

Does she only have whiskers on one side of her face, or is that just a trick of the light?

Of course I did...right after I risked life and limb to get this safari shot.

She turned 15 in November, and her whiskers are starting to turn gray. So far, only two on that side have done so. Kind of like what’s happening with my beard...

Well, take heart, soon the beard will be all white.

I'm in my late 50s and while my hair is still somewhat dark (I call it "steel grey") last winter I let the beard grow out for the first time in many years, and it was pure white.

If I recall you don't have anything visible up top to compare it with, is that right? I still have hair though it diminishes every year. From the front I almost look like a not-bald guy but from the back the monk's tonsure is dramatic.

Here in Norway, all concerts etc. were shut down from last Wednesday. No gigs, no gatherings, no pubs, no restaurants (only take-away), no schools. Only some stores are open. This means no income at all, just over night. But, we got some good news yesterday morning. The Government decided to give all musicians (and other freelancers) 80% of their average income for the last three years (up to a limit) from day 17 after the first cancellation. That's why we pay taxes, folks.

Absolutely. Small businesses, shopping malls and pharmacies are still open but any gathering of more than 10 people and most of the public infrastrucure is forbidden or closed. Public daycare is open and schools for children whose parents are working in critical fields like medical infra are still going. Can`t be more thankful for working and effective universal health care and public services, along with the fact that social problems like homelessness are relatively small around here. That`s why we pay taxes and complaints about it seems to be gone with the wind now.

Stay safe my fellow TB`rs!!!

We have a crazy situation of panic buying here in Sydney, Australia, with supermarket shelves each day empty of toilet paper, rice , pasta and pasta sauce, tissues, hand sanitisers and meat, especially mince, etc. Our two big supermarket chains, Woolworths and Coles, have begun opening early for the elderly (like me) and less mobile to have a separate chance but when I went there at 7am this morning the shelves were still bare.

People took our various levels of government too seriously when they suggested that we should lay in a small amount of extra supplies each time we shopped!!!!!!!!

I tried a butcher for mince and he smiled wryly. They sold 80kg of mince in less than an hour this morning. A customer had spent $500 in one go on meat. They must have one body-sized home freezer compared to our fridge!

With bushfires, drought and floods so far this year we have had some natural disasters of Biblical proportions to which we can now add Coronavirus. My wife and I are 78 and in the high risk bracket. We should be relatively safe as only few people come to our door each week except that our daughter works in a small but busy rehabilitation hospital for elderly people. She does have her own small separate apartment on our property but eats her evening meals with us. The orchestras that I play with have cancelled their rehearsals and concerts and I might be giving my students lessons via Skype. All around town the gig scene has collapsed and one of our big orchestras, The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, has announced plans to stream live concerts from their empty hall to its subscribers.

I could go on and on about the shortcomings of our current Prime Minister and Federal Government who have often been caught flat-footed and slow to respond to these political, social and economic challenges. We still have senior Right Wing politicians in power who are climate change deniers and fiercely debated a bill on religious freedom while the country burned recently. We describe the unreality of their perceptions as the Canberra Bubble and worry about how they are going to steer us through the threatened economic recession and its rise in urban unemployment if the "gig economy" (part time work) collapses. Also how committed they will be to still financially support recovery efforts in the bushfire, drought and flood affected areas.

We were in the middle of rehearsal today when the alert went out that all bars and restaurants are being closed here in the mountains of Colorado, so no gig on Sunday. Phew. Really didn't want to do it, but the bar owner was insisting we show and if we didn't we had to pay someone else to do it.

Otherwise stocked up 4 months of food, 30 books from the library. Travel trailer ready to go to remote quarantine spot if necessary.

Good luck and hope everyone comes out the other side ok.

Yup, when our governor shut down dine-in restaurants statewide, that kind of resolved the issue. Hope you're doing OK.

Overall, humor still seems to be alive and living.

Similar in Denmark, although I'm not sure freelancers are covered in the same way. However, if an employer is struggling with finances and contemplating to make redundancies of 30% (or more than 50 employees), the government urge them not to fire people, but send them home with full pay and the government will immediately reimburse the employer between 75-90% of the pay up to a certain limit. The employees are not allowed to work during the period they are sent home with full pay..

My daytime job is transporting (by car) elderly and sick people to and from hospitals, doctors, clinics, therapists etc. So you can say I'm right in the middle of 'exposure' from potential virus 'carriers', or potentially being a carrier myself.. So hand sanitation is extremely vigorous, as well as disinfection of handles, seat belts etc..mouth protection is not advised by the Danish health authorities as these are ineffective in stopping a virus. Hand sanitation and disinfection is paramount, and much more effective. But alas, there's only so much one can do when you have three 90-yr old fragile people in the small space of a car cabin.. And I can't avoid touching them..(try aiding a fragile elderly with a recent hip replacement in or out of the backseat of a sedan/saloon car, without touching them). So a large stockpile of nitril gloves is needed, too.. some have Alzheimer's or other mental illnesses, and do not understand the importance of sneezing/coughing into their sleeve or a paper towel, and will happily fill the confined space of the car with microscopic droplets of potential disease..

That said, the volume of these transports have dropped to a level - due to cancellations - that makes my already minuscule wages unsustainable, so I'm hoping my employer will take advantage of the generous government offer, and send me home with (almost) full pay. Then I can practice some bass playing, although there are no gigs in a foreseeable future..

I'm blessed by living in a country where the government has relatively deep pockets, and I pay my taxes(50%) with pleasure (almost) , because I know I won't be left out in the cold, even in a widespread crisis like this.

Hoping ALL of you wonderful TB'ers manage to stay afoot - financially and health wise - in these dire times

All the best

I'm enjoying an upside to 'social distancing' Here's a picture of my dog, Tripp, and me at Jordan Lake State Park. I can hear the fish jumping and not a person in site. View attachment 3746022

Well, that was fun while it lasted. The park ranger came by to say the governor had ordered all state parks closed and everyone had to leave. Oh well.

I'm lucky, I live at the lake. I'm actually going to put my dock in Friday I think. Supposed to be 61 and sunny, and nothing else to do around here right now....

On that note, I wanna have a quick cry. This is the worst birthday ever.... Lol. I'm supposed to be playing a gig tonight at my favorite watering hole, which is always packed with beautiful ladies in low cut tops and stuffed with good whiskey and blowing taps. Instead I'm watching cartoons with my kid. LAME.

OK, rant over. I know it's all necessary and for the greater good. I actually feel horrible for the servers and bartenders. My favorite bartender works tomorrow and I'm gonna order takeout and tip her a few hundo to help her out with her mortgage and stuff. Hard times for some people. We gotta stick together, right?!?!

Sainte everyone!

Hmm, so much musical talent just sitting around and anxious to play... Maybe in another 5 to 10 years of tech growth we can all sit down in our living rooms and jam online, in real time, without horrible lag issues, and pull it off tastefully. Unfortunately we're just not there now.

I was thinking we could pass around a recording track. I got a start on a tune with acoustic guitar, a melody, first verse. I'll email it to someone and they add a track, pass it on to the next guy.... And so on...

We MAY be there already. I just downloaded Jamkazam (It's FREE). Supposedly it has very little latency (if you have fast web, which I have. Maybe we should start a new thread for this - in fact I think I'll do that right now.
