budget compressor, one that fattens tone...

Since you said "budget" right there in the first sentence...
I had a Joyo Scylla on my board until I replaced it with a Lusithand Alma.

The Scylla is a VERY good compressor pedal.
But for the price? Unbeatable.
I had to triple the price before I found something I liked better.

The tone (tilt EQ) control on the Scylla will let you cut highs/boost lows, and there are enough other knobs to dial in a wide variety of compression sounds.

I almost sent mine back...until I figured out that the attack and release controls function backward from what I expected.
The manual leaves a lot to be desired - but once you dial the Scylla in, it sounds great.

I just bought the R-27 Scylla Bass compressor and I am trying to learn all the infinite settings turning the knobs.
Focusing on Attack and Release knobs, I have the same idea as yours: their function backward from what I expected or from what is commonly meant in compressor settings.
They have to be meant as speed control and not time. Turning knobs clockwise means speed increase thus shortening compressor action.
So probably:
  • If ATTACK is fully clockwise, the speed will be high and the compressor engages after a very short amount of time (very quickly).
  • If ATTACK is fully counterclockwise, the speed will be low and the compressor engages after a very long amount of time (very slowly).
Tha same is for RELEASE knob. 8 o'clock means low speed release (long time to release). 4 o'clock means high speed release (quick release).

Do you think I am right? What about RATIO knob? I wrote to JOYO company, hoping that a technician will reply my questions.

I've got the same pedal. Turning up the ratio does what you expect and increases the ratio. Counter clockwise seems to go all the way down to 1:1.

I have the same idea for RATIO knob: Counter clockwise seems to go all the way down to 1:1 while clockwise goes to 1:infinity.
I am lacking info about ATTACK and RELEASE knobs that in my opinion have to be meant as speed and not time.
Low speed=long time before compressor engages or release the original sound
High speed=short time before compressor engages or release the original sound

Now I take a look to the Jayme Lewis video and I hope thatthe tech guys from Joyo will reply to my email.
 
a while ago the walrus Mira compressor was ~100. I think it was discontinued but if you could find one for that price it’s a keeper. It also has a side chain HPF switch to keep the lowest notes from over triggering the compressor, which is really useful.


Lots of other options but as said above some will suck out low end (dsm Humboldt which is great for guitar).

I think you have it exactly right.
For RATIO, counterclockwise (7 o'clock) is mild compression and clockwise (5 o'clock) is strong compression/limiting.

The INPUT knob controls the signal level feeding into the compressor - so it's like a combination threshold/input pad.

Joyo technician replied to my email. Here is the answer: "Turning "Attack" knob and "Release" knob both are going from slow to fast"

So they use words like "slow" and "fast" meaning that it is a matter of SPEED of reaction and not time.
Therefore turning knobs of Joyo Scylla R-27 BASS compressor from max counterclockwise (7 o'clock) to max clockwise (5 o'clock) works as follows:
RATIO: from 1:1 to 1:infinite (as expected)
ATTACK: from low speed = slow (long time before engaging compression) to high speed = fast (short time in engaging compression)
RELEASE: from low speed = slow (long time before releasing original sound) to high speed = fast (short time before releasing original sound)
TONE: acts as expected tone control
INPUT: consider it a threshold

Coming from a production background, one of my peeves about pedal compressors is the fact that they don't provide controls for all these standard compressor parameters. :confused: At least 85% of all my compressor plugins have at least those parameters.

But if the OP wants to really dig in and understand what all the parameters do to the signal, as they said they wanted to do, they're gonna need controls for all the parameters.

It might be more than 98% -- I'm trying to think of a pedal that has both input gain and threshold ... There are a few with all the others plus either threshold or input gain (e.g. Mira and Mozztronics have threshold, the new Warm Audio Pedal76 has input gain but no threshold), but I'd be interested to know if there is one.
 
:woot:Clear nailpolish would dime the LED, a cloudy yet semi-transparent (semi-opaque?) makes a great dimmer for bright LEDs.
I've also used black paint to tame some overly-radiant little light emitters.

Scylla 27 seems good, I wonder what it's based on (the promo-ganda is that it's an original design).
I'd want to rehouse it with top-jacks, other than that, what a bargooonnn!


There's no mention on Joyo's website as to what type of compression circuit it employs — OTA, Optical... I'm thinking it's probably VCA...
Can someone please post a gutshot of their pedal? I couldn't find any gutshots online.
