i have been considering buying a fender MIM bass and was wondering since i have heard that its a hit or miss if i shouldnt hold out and get something diferent, my budget is kind of tight so i cant go american. what are my options?

You're right on the "hit or miss" thing - I think the general opinion on MIM basses is you have to try out the actual bass to know for sure. You might get a really nice one... or not. 
Also, you might want to look into the 'Vintage Modified' series that Squier puts out. Really nice basses (I own one of the fretted Jazz models), right on par with the MIM Fenders, IMHO. And you'd be saving a bit of cash also!

You might want to think about giving the Squire Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz a try. Lots of good reviews on that one, I played only one but I liked it.
IMO, most of the "hit & miss" issues on a MIM are setup-related. Good strings, a setup, and maybe a pickup upgrade can make a MIM sing like a bird. Especially on the fretless, since fret sprout wouldn't be an issue.
