Anyway, we seem to agree: you can by something half finished, to a quality/price level as offered, or you have to make it yourself entirely.

Of all things involved with building a bass, good finish work is probably the most difficult. I'd rather build the entire thing with a Swiss Army knife and send it to someone else to finish than buy one mostly assembled and focus on the finish work; first attempts rarely come out in form that you would want to take out in public! People spend their entire careers learning to do great finish work. if you have the skills and desire / tenacity to assemble someone else's parts into a finished product, you have what it takes to build the whole thing. Patience and the ability to visualize an outcome and see it through are as critical as a skilled hand. If you are really cautious, visit another builder and take some private lessons on building to get you through the crux areas. All the time we have spent on this thread could have been used to rough carve the top or bend the ribs already.......

You can buy kitted violins, mandolins, and guitars so why not basses? Probably not a huge market for them to be commercially practical. I'm now 3 years into my 6 month first bass project but I'm loving every minute of it. It would help if I could actually work on it every weekend without having to take several months off at a time. It's a great experience and if you can throw yourself into it you'll be happier. Use the Traeger and the Chandler books. Wake's is okay but not as descriptive. And of course here! Great info.
