Building my First Bass Cab..HELP!!!

"Building a single speaker cab @ 4 ohms is a bad idea too"

Why is it a bad idea? The amp I have right now has a external jack for a 4ohm cab bringing my wattage up. Tell me how in the world that's a bad idea?

What amp is it ?

Getting "all the wattage" by maxing out your amp is a losing proposition. More speaker surface area trumps wattage output EVERY time.

Again, if you don't understand, then you need to do way more research before starting.

I'm young (not going to tell you how old, but old enough to still be in highschool) and I really don't appreciate being told that trying a woodworking project is a bad idea. Excuse me, let me go buy an XBOX and play video games all day. Whether or not it's cost effective, I'd really like to actually DO something and learn whether it means I fail or not.

Trust me, your not the first young guy to think they could save some money doing it themselves.

You'll also not be the first to figure out the hard way that building cabs involves science and engineering, not just putting a speaker in a box.

I, too, once considered building a cabinet to "save money". I quickly came to the conclusion that there isn't any savings to be be had, especially when quality cabinets can be had for less money on the used market after all factors have been considered (wood, drivers, fasteners, glue, damping material, handles, etc).

Well, considering that I've wanted to go into mechanical engineering since six grade and spent 7 years building and designing parts and products using CAD programs, let me totally go at this project with no knowledge whatsoever. I've gone to camps, workshops, etc about mechanical engineering that is going to be my future.

I don't care about money or anything like that now, I want to do something that is productive. If it fails, so be it then. I have a new driver I can put in my old amp. Unlike anything you might hear of any 'young guy' like me. Maybe I was wrong. But you shouldn't try to stifle somebody who is interested in things that hardly any other teens are interested in.

But because of my 'level', let me go buy somebody else's stuff and never do anything that interests me

I'm not gonna try and discourage You, or beat Ya up about it. I would hate for You to throw Your time and money away on something that'd be sub-par. Do Your homework on speaker design, and it will pay off big time in the end.

Most who go the DIY cab route, do so with specific tonal goals or weight saving aspects in mind, not to be spend thrifty or save money. Also, most DIY'ers follow a set of cab plans that have been properly engineered and have a proven track record. "Flying blind" with no idea of what You're doing, has a high chance of ending in epic fail (pile of sawdust, useless box, and a useless driver).

With that said, I would think that Your best bet would be to find something used that fits Your budgetary restraints or tonal goals. I'd say without a doubt that a cab that would meet Your needs could easily be found on craigslist for a fair price.

Oh yea, I wouldn't expect to find much for under $150.00. You might want to throw that in the piggy bank, be patient and save You up some cash for a really good cab. No point in building a rig half arsed.

Again, what is your amp ?

How do you know that the "like new driver" will even be compatible in your current amp ?

Have you modeled it in a speaker box designing program ?

These are the points some of us here are trying to get across.

If you are trying to make a cab to add on to a combo you already have, then you need to start there.

What speaker is in the current amp ?

Mixing different brands of speakers is also not the way to go. And again, if you did not know that, then there is a lot of research that needs to be done FIRST.

This was obvious from your first post. If you want to do this thing then go ahead. There is little worse than the feeling you get when something you have spent time, effort and money on turns out to be a pigs ear. All the posters have said is trying to prevent you from experiencing that pain. Following the plans of a proven design pretty much guarantees a successful end to a project.

The smallest size plywood you use should be 1/2" void free and that will need to be well braced.

If you want to "do something that is productive", then please take the advice you've been given here with a positive attitude and try to understand that everybody is actually trying to help you out, whether it sounds that way or not. There's nothing productive about buildilng a cab that won't work when you were told up front by people who know better that it's probably not a good idea.

Good engineering comes from using proven science and established design principles to build something right the first time around, not trial and error. And yes, I am an engineer. I understand you're looking for experience, but why not make it count for something at the end of the day by building a cab you know will be great? I wanted experience cabinet building, so I built a fEarful 15/6. It was a great way to learn what works and what doesn't as far as actually building a wood box goes, and I didn't have to worry about whether or not it would sound like **** at the end of the day.
 
I say build it.

It might come out nice. Even if it does end up half-assed, it will still be a good learning experience and a much less waste of money than the absolute brain rot and complete waste of money, time, life and soul that is video games.

This is the attitude I have adopted. I did the research. I asked the questions. I considered several plans that were presented. I learned how to use the design software. I practiced on scrap material. Even using good advise from experienced people, it still might turn out schlock ( my wife's word). But, there's no better way to learn than by doing.
 
The CA154 is an extremely cost-effective woofer in my opinion, the only potential drawback I can see is that you're already at 4 ohms, so if you need more SPL you can't readily add another cab without the impedance going too low. But for the money (and weight), the CA154 moves a lot of air and has a nice response curve.

I'd probably put it in something like 3.2 cubic feet net internal volume, and tune it to maybe 45 Hz or so. You'll only be -2 dB at the first overtone of low-B (62 Hz), and the lower tuning frequency gives you better fartout resistance than the 55 Hz tuning frequency in Eminence's published 3.75 cubic foot design. Two 4" diameter ports, each 6" long, will get you there.

If weight is an issue, I suggest 1/2" (12 mm) Arauco plywood from Lowes, thirty-something bucks a sheet ballpark. Note that bracing becomes more critical as your plywood thickness and weight go down. Butt joints are fine if you glue & screw them, that's what I do for prototyping, with a good countersink bit and #6 x 1.25" drywall screws (cheaper than wood screws). Use "corner clamps" to hold your joints square while you glue, drill, and screw. If there's a flaw in the wood such that getting an airtight seal is questionable, make some putty by mixing sawdust and glue (assuming you're using wood glue). And after the initial assembly, run an extra bead of glue around the joints from inside the box.

Good bracing can make your DIY build better than a roughly equivalent commercial cab. Ideal would be a window brace that goes around the cabinet at roughly mid-height, and you'd have to bignotch the brace to allow for the woofer frame and magnet. This would adequately stiffen all four vertical boards. Then glue 2.5" wide plywood strips edgewise on the top and bottom in a "+" sign pattern, butted/glued against one another in the middle. Also, do similar edgewise bracing between cut-outs. So if your woofer and port cut-outs are on the front panel, plan on some extra edgewise bracing there. The front panel is subject to the strongest vibrations so pay the most attention to it.

If you can do internal ratios of 1: 1.62 : 2.62, that would be great. I have used such ratios in studio speakers, but never in a bass cab because it just doesn't end up being as practical. Another set of ratios that works well is 1: 1.26: 1.59. You might be able to get away with no internal damping (foam glued to inner walls) with these ratios, which in turn results in a little tiny bit more low end energy.

If you really want to get fancy, use three 4" diameter PVC pipe ports on the back of the cabinet, in a symmetrical row, with the middle port centered behind the woofer magnet. You may have to shift your window brace location to accomodate the ports; it's more important to have that middle port centered than to have the window brace exactly on the midline. Each port is 6" long, and make the cabinet deep enough to allow at least 2.5" of clearance between the middle port and the woofer magnet. Buy two 4" diameter expandable plumber's test plugs, and verify beforehand that they will fit your ports. With three ports open, the tuning frequency is 54 Hz (big low end, possible fartout issues). Plug the middle port, and the tuning frequency is 45 Hz (medium low end). Unplug the middle port and plug the two end ports, and the tuning frequency is 33 Hz (tight low end).

Learn from your mistakes, learn from your successes, and your best speaker will always be your next speaker.
