Building the ultimate Punk Bass

It's been a while talkbass. But I recently started playing bass again, i found a way to incorporate it into my lo-fi electronic deal.(Game boys, some Amiga stuff)

Basically i play super distorted to all hell basslines over top, with so much feedback and fuzz going on you don't even need drugs.

Right now i'm using my rickenbacker (geez those things have shot up in price since i bought mine 6 years ago, in some cases doubled here) but I came across something old i did that made me go "wow, i want this"

There's a few changes I want to make to it, ie. ditch the jazz pickups for just a darkstar in the bridge, white headstock.
There's no knobs on there, im sure that was just an oversite because at the time it was a concept for someone else, but i like the idea of all loud all the time, maybe a kill switch for fun.
Currently tuned CADG to keep up with the Gameboys low C (also adds some mad huge crunch on the rick)

I'm thinking it will be a warmoth job.

Any reccomendations or changes you'd make?

This looks awesome. Build the HELL out of this. Then post some bass porn so we broke puds who can't afford a warmoth project at the mo' can get our drool on.

Go forth and destroy, sir.

It looks cool, but I don't really think you can have the ultimate "punk" bass. To me, that's old beat up Fender P-Basses and Gibson EB-0 and EB-3s. Punk is a state of mind, and almost any bass can get a good tone for punk.

I agree with some of the others as well ... that is a VERY COOL looking bass and I like the Fender headstock as well ... but to set out to make "the ultimate punk bass" just doesn't feel very punk. Punk is a state of mind .... either you are or you're not punk. And punk fans can smell out the fakes. Just be true to yourself and make the bass you want.

Now when I think of punk I do think of a beat to hell P or Gibson ...

Good luck and would love to see it when it comes to fruition.

Perhaps punk was poor choice of words.

I think I mentioned previously i see it really as a kind of alternate take on the classic white P.

On the topic of punk. The most punk thing in music right now for me, is kids making music on computers with pirated software.

Instruments cost a lot of money, most of us have computers already these days, with a simple trip to the torrent factory or a disc from a friend you can have professional grade tools at your disposal.

Punk rock is dead, long live the new wave.

Well it could be the ultimate punk bass BUT...

You need to build it yourself with all local materials. The local materials also need to be animal and child labor, unfair labor, and gluten free. It will also need to be acoustic because using an amp that runs off electricity is just another way to tie you to the government infrastructure that you hate.

Finally if you accomplish all of that, go order some pyramid studs off of ebay and hammer those into the bass. Because nothin is more punk then f'ing studs!

When I think of "punk bass", I think of a beat-up P. You`re design is very, very nice, btw. The "ultimate punk bass" was one I saw here awhile back. It was a beat-to-death pink P clone with a PG made out of a Pac Man cabinet laminate. No knobs, just wide-open. And dig the ground wire.

Exact same thing I thought. I even have those same pictures saved. That bass makes me randy.

Best bass for punk-

-under $150, maybe a lefty converted righty with nail polish or sharpy dots to mark the top(bottom) of the neck. Stickers for sure, profanity optional but not discouraged. No case.

I actually kinda want a lefty P-bass converted to righty. I think it would look really weird and cool. I'd probably just wire it straight to jack, no point in volume and tone knob for me.
