Seriouslly the moment someone tries to dictate what is/isn't punk it ceases to be punk.

If you want to play a Bass made out of solid gold and crammed full of diamonds, it's still punk.

To the OP, I get where you're coming from with that, though. Someone gave me a Hondo Longhorn once, and I didn't like the way it sounded much, but I had an old Gibson EB-0 and a Rickenbacker neck pickup, so I put those in it too because more pickups = mo beddah sound, right?

Pretty much only Paul Simenon plays a P. Jay plays a Jack Casady, Matt Freeman plays a Rick, Alvarez plays a ton of different basses, as does Chuck Dukowski.

Most of them at one time or another played Fenders....at least when I saw some of them live they did!

Fat Mike's P bass pickups were held in with stickers and kept falling out.

Jay Bentley just recently switched to the Cassidy bass...he's even posted a pic of his very worn in P bass here on TB!

Karl Alverez used to play Jazz basses...one that he painted with grey primer house paint.

I just did a google image search on Matt Freeman and saw a dozen or so pics with P Deluxes...and same with Chuck Dukowski...lots of Fender pics.

And of course, the most famous punk pic from the cover of London Calling with Paul bashing up a Fender P...which he regretted.

Of course all those players don't ONLY play one type of bass especially over their long careers. I think that you failed to see my point originally. Which was...there's no actual "punk bass"

Touche, sir. Actually my first bass with a punk band was a hondo P ripoff, routed big holes in the body and cut a pizza slice out of the back.

Exactly my point!!!!!! My first bass was a Global P ripoff...then I had a Peavey Fury for a while...then a EBMM Sterling....now a G&L L-2000.

I moved up to a Fender Jazz, and no I will not be routing holes...

Getting a generic P bass, sticker the hell out of it and play it till it falls apart on you!
They you put it back together and play it some more. Then it will be that road worn bass that many will pay $1000 to replicate and call it Punk!

My punk bass is a Squier Jazz V with pieces of pink duct tape over the p-ups. Punk is really not focused on the instrument at all... not even the music, really.
