Built crossover for Avatar cab horn

Ok, I've been using my Avatar 2X10 for a few months now, and I think its time for me to (spend some money) build a 4th order crossover.

I was planing on getting the better cap's but, I can seem to find the 3.2uF (C1), should I get the Dayton one? [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Also, can anyone put a link for the plastic board used for securing the components.

Other then the soldering, will I need anything else?

IMO Dayton caps and Jantzen coils are just fine. Even a 'golden ear' would have trouble telling the difference in a studio, let alone on stage,
 
Great, I think I can get a 1/4 plywood pretty easy.

So, Is this gonna work for me? Do I need anything else?

Spending more for Perfect Lay coils is a waste of money, especially since all they do is shunt LF signal to ground.


IIRC this thread applied to the original Avatar crossover, which wasn't a crossover, just a high pass capacitor. If your cab is a newer model that uses a real crossover the low-pass elements would have to be replaced by the values required to match it to the corner frequency of the high pass filter. Otherwise the woofers and tweeter would have overlapping bandwidths, which would render your work for naught.

Go with the cheaper coils for the HP. For the LP go with the cheapest that have less than 0.4 ohms DCR. Don't bother with a 4th order LP, 2nd order is all you need. You can't use an 8 ohm value for the woofers (assuming it's an 8 ohm cab) as the drivers aren't 8 ohms much above 1kHz. At 3.3 kHz an actual impedance of 12 ohms is in the ballpark.

Ok, so, 4th order to the HP Using
C1 = 3.2 uF
C2 = 6.39 uF
and
L1 = 0.24 mH
L2 = 1.09 mH

While for the woofers (3.3Khz, 12ohm 2th order Linkwitz Riley)
C2 = 2.01 uF
L2 = 1.16 mH

Do I need to use 2 of the LP here or can treat the "woofers" as one element?

Right now the partsexpress site is down, so I can't find any info about a coil with less than 0.4 ohms DCR.
This is my first DIY crossover, so I don't mind paying a few extra $ to save trouble.

Anyone think this would work: run the speaker wire that would be feeding the tweeter, to an output jack on the back. Plug this into a HF speaker such as the Hartke 4.5 which I just so happen to have. Would it put out enough juice to power 4 x 5" speakers? Would I need to change the transformer so it lets a higher wattage through?
 
There is no transformer. There is a crossover, and it will not pass frequencies low enough to make it worth while using a five.

OK, I thought part of the crossover at least acted like a transformer in that it took the wattage down to a level that would not blow the tweeter. Is it just that the hi passing is making it much less powerful? This is a 2000 watt cab and I have 2000 available from the head.
 
Sorry for the bump, but does anyone know if the current avatar crossovers are any better than the past ones? I'm curious about that "4th Order Linkwitz 3.3khz" and if it would still be an upgrade worth pursuing for my SB112. Especially if that means it could better as a small PA cab for small occasions.
