Howza Bout THIS?

HAYMAN 40/40

Here is a very unusual Hayman 40/40 bass. Made in England by Jim Burns (Burns Bison Bass) for The Dallas-Arbiter company from 1970-1973. Has a full powerful P Bass tone and lots of cool Perspex - Smoked, like the PU covers and pickguard, or clear like the bridge and headstock logo. Bound fretboard, Zero fret, hidden truss rod adjustment, similar to EBMM wheel design.[/QUOTE]

Hi,

I'm very new on this forum but here is my contribution to this club :

This is a 1963 Bison Bass, the one i wanted since highschool. It took me decades before getting this one.

The sound of Dave Richmond on the records of Serge Gainsbourg and Scott Walker has always been my favorite. I 've tried everything, including the reissue, but you'll only get it with this one.

Very rare, indeed, even in Europe. I had to chase this one in Switzerland.

The combination of the middle and neck pickup is unique.

As on all Burns instruments you're far away from a precision bass wiring !

By the way : i'm looking for morganite pots that would make it 100% genuine.


And i'd like to find someone who could explain the positions Tenor+B and Bass+B to me. I know it involves one transformer or the other but i don't understand why the resulting sounds are so different.

Nearly 40 years ago, someone gave me a bust up body (only!) of a Burns bass. I didn't have the wherewithal to do anything with it then, but (thanks Mr WorldWideWeb..) I do now; so although I have no Ser/nbr, it's ID'd as a Vista Sonic and now has a bespoke neck (great job, Lighthouse Guitars UK) and off-the-shelf tuners.
There are a few posts above about electrical info. Does anyone have a proven-good circuit diagram that they could share, or even just sharp photos of the components mounted onto the scratchplate on a working bass, so I could match them? I have vol, tone, and 4-way rotary switch on top, and two inductors, a capacitor and a resistor under the hood, to run the three pickups (which each seem ok).
So near, but so far.....
Photos with scratchplate off shows just how faded the body got over nearly 60 years...

Maybe it's too late but Alfons Lahaye is the man : he knows everything on Burns instruments.
He gave me the schematics of my Burns Bison and sold me genuine parts.

Very serious and passionate guy.

Just a tip, if you find that the Wild Dog setting is useless/unpleasant, if you’re willing to make one reversible mod, @JIO showed me how to flip two wires on my Ampeg/Burns Vista Sonic Bass, resulting in what I consider now to be the best-sounding tone option of the four. Basically, the Wild Dog setting is out of phase. The mod puts it back in phase. Vast improvement.

Thank you but i already did it !

Nevertheless you have 8 possible configurations on the bison and, for my taste, the two best are elsewhere.

Actually, I never use the configurations with the treble pickup.

The Dave (Champagne) Richmond nickname came about because when we worked at Chapels Studio in New Bond Street, situated near the studio was a drinking establishment called ‘Yate’s Wine Lodge’. In there you could buy a bottle of their own brand of Champagne for about £1.50 when a bottle of Moët would have been about £2.00 or more at that time in other drinking establishments. Consequently we always drank champagne when we worked at Chappels Studio! Whoopee!!!!
