Burying strings?

now I had a thread a while ago about deep frying your strings to try and kill them. (as in if you want to get rid of the break in period on a set of flats...)

well I was talking to a drummer friend of mine today and he mentioned that he once burried a cymbal in his back yard for quite a while to get the bright sounding finish off of it... Now This got me thinking... (always dangerous by the way)

I wonder if I could do the same with strings and have it work the same way... then always keep a spare set burried back there as well as a pre-burried set with me.. I would wipe them down before use...

any thoughts?

Wouldn't it be easier just to put them in a tupperware full of ketchup and keep a set in the fridge?

Give it a try and let us know how it works. It would be better if the strings were kept tuned up while buried, so bury the whole bass. That'll give it some serious funk.

PS: Want a dead set of strings? Put on some D'Addario XL nickels, get an order of greasy french fries from the drive thru, and eat and play for 45 minutes. Then leave your bass in the bathroom for a few days to get really humid when you shower (assuming you take hot showers (assuming you shower at all, how do I know really...)). You'll be awfully close to getting what you're after methinks.

Kidding aside ... Give it a try and see if you think it helps. I would tend to think; however, that asfretlessman71 mentioned, some sort grease would do the trick a tad faster and without all the hassle. Good luck

Don't you know the sound out of your bass comes from the total rig you are using, not just the strings?
Therefore, to get the sound you really want you've got to dig a large enough hole to bury ALL your stuff together - don't forget the effects board too. Just throw all of it in, cover well with good soil and water it down completely, then leave for 2-4 weeks. When you dig it up the strings will be perfect!
(Be sure all your stuff is still under warranty first)

These threads always seem ridiculous to me... Why don't you just play your strings to make them dead. You could be deadening those strings right now instead of thinking up crazy ways to be lazy.

That's like putting your baseball glove under the mattress to break it in. Just play with the derned thing.

Yeah, just play them for 24 hours every day. Then you'll have some nice dead strings pretty quick AND you'll be a better player!

Burying your strings does work. But only if you find that certain crossroads down in Mississippi and bury them on the stroke of midnight. A dead cat to throw over your shoulder wouldn't hurt either. Or are you supposed to bury it with the strings? I forget.

Be sure the soils' ph content is correct... something less than 7 should be good. Maybe like a 4. You may need to add some chemicals to correct for any positive ph readings.
