Double Bass Busted seam help!!!

Still, hide glue is very strong but it has two primary benefits in musical instrument repair.
1) It dries very hard and has no creep. In short, it is brittle. When there is stress, seams pop. Generally, wood doesn’t crack.
2) It is easily reversible. A bit of warm water is all it takes to completely remove, and then we can do the repair. Titebond and other PVA glues are very difficult to remove.

Another thing. It is virtually invisible, making it ideal for gluing cracks. Cracks glued with Titebond will show.

I know of some guitar and mandolin makers who use Titebond for things like blocks which should never require repair, but I won’t touch it.

I agree different ways to skin a cat. Use what you feel comfortable with.

Just because it is on youtube does not mean it is correct or anything we want to recommend!

Wait! If it's on the internet, is has to be true, doesn't it???
;)

Those of you making comments about Jerry Rosa not being legit go watch his videos before you comment. After watching 30 or 40 hours of his videos I’ve actually learned a lot.

Here you go he starts leading to the subject at 29:13. Glue at around 32:00.

Here’s his current project. I’m sure many of you have repaired something like this before.
Oh wait it must be fake since it’s on the internet...:roflmao:

The point is not about Jerry. What we are saying is that 400 years of double bass building and repair has taught us that hot hide glue is the universally accepted choice for double bass repair for short term and over the lifetime of the instrument through multiple repairs.

Sure, traditional repair methods will work just fine.
IMO the OP will do a much better self repair with Titebond original than with hide glue.

You can agree or disagree with my suggestion, but ridiculing me and the source I provided because you disagree is just not cool. Typical display of ignorance by people who are set in their ways if you ask me.

Ruknrole, how many repairs have you personally done? How many neck resets, top off repairs, fingerboard replacements? I’m asking about violins, violas, cellos and basses.

Does it really matter? 1 or 100, does it make it ok for me to be ridiculed over recommending a glue?

Done with this thread. Highjacked it long enough with this fiasco.
Have a great day.

What @Ruknrole doesn't understand is that seams are meant to open when weather changes the instrument or when a luthier needs to get inside. A permanent repair on the seam is what incorrect more than the choice of glue.
Titebond hide glue will get a seam closed and a luthier can get it out later. I would order 3 or 4 clamps.
These are cheap and easy to use:
Gluing Clamps (spool)  | Southwest Strings

Also, please do not take double bass repair advice from bass guitarists who don't even list owning a double bass in their profile.
Unless I missed something, I searched his activity and see no posts that show any experience relevant to this topic.
Advice that could cause the OP unnecessary damage to the instrument and expense should not be given lightly.

The OP was looking for help 6 months ago.

I - regrettably - resurrected his thread to ask about a detail in performing the same repair. I had already made the decision to use the right glue (HHG) after reading the 10,000 other glue threads on this forum. I just removed the clamps, and my bass has much more volume and the body no longer buzzes when I play a G.

Thanks for the help!

(You glue-arguing wankers can kindly let this thread die again!)

I would say there is enough consensus and the advice is dangerous enough that I would suggest the mods should remove his posts. @TroyK @Chris Fitzgerald

Sure remove my posts. I don’t care. Silliness over glue. Titebond repair will not ruin the instrument and can be just as easily removed by a competent luthier. Sorry I ventured into this sub forum.

And yes I don’t own a double bass. Didn’t know you had to own one to know how to glue a seam on an instrument.
