Busy summer - my SR5 is showing it!

I ***ALWAYS*** wear my belt so the the buckle is shifted to the left between the 2 loops to the left of center (center being the zipper of course). The result? No more belt rash. Nada. Clean bass body backs. Get into the habit. Then move on with your musical life always behind a pristine bass.
Of course if you are into stickers, road wear, buckle rash etc, be my guest.

I tend to sweat a lot when i play and the back of my beloved GrapeRay 5 is chipping and flaking! Pretty sure it's because of the bass resting against my body. that has nothing to do with sweat. That is a bad finish. Is it still under warranty?

Hmm, my main axe is 26 years old with a painted finish.
It is chipped plenty but not blistering.
MAybe you have very acidic sweat.

I play outside in the Myrtle Beach area most of the time. Must be the heat.

As others have posted, there’s a history of some EBMM instruments having this paint issue. Contact EBMM and see if they will do something for you, or at least recommend a coarse of action. They might offer to repaint it for a reasonable cost.

That's mojo, it makes it sound better. Seriously though, I love basses that have a story and show they have been played. I'm not a fan of closet queens that are way to nice to be considered a players bass.

Weird thought: Did you switch cases on this bass recently? I have heard of outgassing of adhesives affecting finishes. Many people have said it looks like a heat-gun. I thought it looked like a chemical peel, like when you use that gel to remove paint. Could your bass be exposed to some volatile compound like naptha or acetone?

He said Ray5 in the OP not, Stingray 5. Lower end Rays have weak finishes. I know there is a MM neck plate in the pics, but maybe it got switched or somthing.

That is the new Firemist Purple color only available on full fledged EBMM instruments. The lower end Sterling by Musicman is called the Ray 35. Some folks call Stingrays Rays, me I call it a slingbass. mmmmhmmm

That finish is jacked. I would be on the phone with EBMM yesterday. Here's a friendly tip, If you just changed your strings and you like them better than slinkies you should take them off and sub out an old set. EBMM basses leave the factory from repair just like they do for sale. They do not care a bit about throwing away your old Thomastic flats...

I do exactly the same thing! I learned it from an auto mechanic years ago. I can't tell you how many times I've had to explain why my belt is fastened on my left hip.

It's from drinking too many monster energy drinks. The energy percolates around inside you then comes out through the pores of your skin and destroys the bass finish. You should drink Kambucha daily for a month to cure this. Unfortunately you still have to get the bass refinished. Sorry. I can't fix everything.

Check out Grip6 belts. They sit flat and you don’t have to worry about any kind of buckle rash. Been using one daily for over a year. I’ll never go back.

To OP, that sucks. I’d probably cry if that happened to mine. Definitely contact EB and see if they can do anything.

My sweat must be particularly evil, because it seems to dissolve gold plating. I thought only aqua regia (one part concentrated nitric acid and three parts concentrated hydrochloric acid) dissolved gold!
