I play exclusively at home. Haven't been in a band for 10+ years, likely never will be again but I do enjoy playing along to random beats and music and recording and mixing myself. Do I deserve a nice instrument? Probably not.

Oh well.

Same here I just play at home and annoy the the neighbours I’d love to be in a band but. And of course you deserve a nice instrument if you worked hard for it and can afford it even if you haven’t well aye you deserve it, I can’t play like Jack Bruce but you don’t have to be Lewis Hamilton to drive a Mercedes so why not get something cool and at end of day can always sell in the end who knows if you buy right you may even make some money back

It's interesting...I find myself in a lot of the same boat. I never thought I'd succumb to caring what name is on a headstock but I find myself selling away all of the Harley Bentons I've been buying during quarantine (and they're perfectly decent instruments) so I can afford a decent Squier and then have some extra cash to front a nicer bass. I'm GASing hard for a Fender American Performer P Bass. I like to tinker and upgrade and so I like cheaper things for that as well, but also part of me just wants to have something nice, if for no other reason than it'll be worth more money and it might potentially be a really cool thing for one of my kids to inherit.

Another way I look at things, hobbies cost money.

In my life, I have always had hobbies, and they always required me to work hard to have fun.

Between the muscle car I had,(over $15k), modified jet ski ($8k), firearms (unable to list costs due to Big Brother and the wife watching), ski and snowboarding trips, garage tools, this bass thing is cheap!

Tally everything bass that I have now, even with a Sadowsky on order, where am I at $6k if I’m lucky?

The amount of time that I am home playing, loving and learning bass, far surpasses all of the time I have spent driving & fiddling with my old Chevrolet I had, this is a bargain!

Plus, a great instrument can only inspire you to be a better player, at least that works for me.

Recently I just took things to another level and converted the basement into a music studio, wow now this hobby is exceeding muscle car territory, uhhhh.........just go get that bass!

I can’t agree more my pal says it’s only a guitar he has an old epiphone that does him and can’t see the sense in spending over a hundred quid but a car only gets you to A&B but he has a nice car, each to there own I say why it’s nice to have nice things and having a nice guitar you just want to pick it up and play it more than some cheap crappy poor player of a guitar

I've been saving my spare monies for the last 2 years or so with the explicit purpose of buying a nice American Originals 50's Precision. I have a extensively upgraded Squier VM PBass that is a dream to play as well as an Older Yamaha that belonged to my Grandfather.

Here's the thing though: I am a solid Intermediate player. I don't play full time with a band, I play mostly with songs at home that I enjoy sometimes with a Guitarist I've been playing with for 15 years.

I see other players here discussing intricate details of what works for them and what does not, people that play with bands or are a hell of a lot better than I am and it does not make me feel inferior - but like what I have is "good enough" for me and my purposes. Might seem a silly question, but I'm just curious as to your thoughts, especially from the pros out there.

If you feel it and you have the money, go for it. Plus, once acquired and you have played on it for some time, you’ll be building up your experiences for a basis of comparison.

If only guns were legal I live in The uk I’d love to own a desert eagle or a Dirty Harry gun that’d be pretty cool, mind I did have a pellet gun when I was a kid that was a laugh and catapults my dad used to machine them at work for me and my brother so I’d of defo got myself a gun or 2 if was legal I no people have hunting rifles and shotguns but defo no desert eagles

Yep. Purchases are about three things only

1) Do you have the money?

2) Are you buying it with the intent of hurting others?

3) Will it bring you joy?

If the answers are yep, nope, and yep, go for it!

One night they got in a heated argument about who could drink the most Tennessee Whisky without blacking out so there was an old school shot drinking contest and my Grandpa won the bass. It hung over his mantle like the trophy it was throughout my entire childhood until my grandpa passed from cirrhosis in 2014.

Nah, I'm just kidding with you. It is my late grandpa's, but he just bought a cheapo at a pawn shop - it is just special to me. I had responded to someone else farther back in the tread with the same story, I had to go back and dig it up again.
