It's a hoss. Elwood with ZZ Top is playing something like that, I gather, though probably just for show.

ZZ top was always partly about kitchy visual effects - fur guitars and the like. Elwood (moving from being their tech to being on stage) needed to establish that he's different - Dusty was a meat and potatoes 4 string player. So, out comes a ....different instrument, with a few more strings. For effect - pretty sure he doesn't play that the whole show.

Actually only for the latter part of their heyday. Early ZZ Top was pretty organic, up until they found money and notoriety in kitsch.
