Dont think my bass is really butterscotch but its in that area (the light is making it look more orange in this pic) , just got it last week Yamaha BB614 im very pleased with it.

A maple 'board and the right pickguard helps it somewhat, but in general I find it ugly and more than that, generic. I'm really hoping that Fender's working on some new, "va-va-va-voom" transparent and metallic finishes for Winter NAMM. It's simply been a few too many years of generic bursts (well-done, but generic) and average solid color paint jobs.

Here's my Fender Butterscotch P with a brownish torte guard and some chrome HW. I think it looks better then the standard black pickguard. The wood grain comes through a little more on this one then the rest that I looked at but it's hard to see in the sunlight. The pickguard did not come with a notch for the truss rod adjustment so I made one using my spindle sander (the smallest spindle I had). It worked fine and took less then a minute to do. I also purchased and installed a grounded pickguard plate that fits directly under the pickguard and is the same shape and size. As you can see the pickguard looks more brownish in the indoor shot then it does outdoors.

Jeez, it looks awesome with the tort, and also with the chrome. I have always really detested tort but lately as my vintage GAS increases it's definitely growing on me.

I might have to consider doing exactly what you've done.

Any problems drilling the holes in the wood for the chrome? Did you have to apply masking tape to where you were drilling so the finish wouldn't crack or chip?

Thanks for the compliment. Drilling the holes for the bridge cover was no problem at all. I just lined it up so it was even side to side and made sure that the bottom was not resting against the bridge itself. I then scribbed a mark in pencil on the bass where the holes are. Then I took the cover off and made sure that the pencil marks were even all around. I then drilled the holes with a new drill bit (nice and sharp). The holes for the pickup cover were already in the pickguard from the store.

WOW!!! It's hard to believe a pickguard makes that much difference!!! :eek:
I just got one of those P basses. It's been hanging in GC Peoria for a long time and I because of the color, I didn't even consider it. I finally picked it up and played it. Nice all the way around. No dead spots, great tone, aweful color. I looked at the price tag... $699!!! I walked outa there paying just under $600!! For an American P bass!!! Score!!! :D Anyway, if I change the pickguard to a Tort, I will be able to live with the color just fine!

Also, my bass looks like ash. The website says alder, but I'm completely conviced it's ash. The wood grain looks exactly like the one on Fender's website. Anyone have an alder version? Is Fender just nuts?

I had a 50th anniversary Butterscotch P-bass (2001)....it looked and sounded GREAT! Had to sell it to pay for my 55-02 (sold it to Bino who I hope is enjoying it now)...contrary to some of the comments in this thread, I found the color very pleasurable....
