Buy amp/cabs demo units as new

I had a problem with my GK Backline 600 so I went to the store where I bought it to get a replacement. While there I pondered buying a RB series amp since I would like to add another cabinet and for the sake of having USA made instead of China.

So I decide to buy the 700RB but the sales guy starts to get the floor model that is powered up as a demo unit.

I feel more comfortable buying solid state amps versus a valve amp but I ended up just taking a replacement Backline instead of the upgrade. I just didn't feel 100% about buying a demo unit as new.

Anyone else been given this option when buying "new", I bought my cabinet as a demo unit but got a great price, so it was worth the risk.

When you buy from a 'brick and mortar' retailer (i.e., a store with a showroom), it would be rare NOT to get a 'floor model'. Only the largest of retailers would have the capital and sales volume to put a unit on the floor and then have a bunch of stuff in the back.

However, I agree with you, which is why I rarely buy from a brick and mortar store, and if I do, I am patient and put in an order for a new unit in the box. On the other side of the issue, since most new gear that fails will do so in the first day or two, there is a school of thought that buying units from the floor of a retailer (assuming they aren't beat up) is the best way to go. It just depends how fussy you are about having an absolutely unused product.

The only drawback that I see (assuming that it's in like-new condition) is that some stores (like Guitar Center) won't allow you to return "demo" gear. Only new and used gear is returnable there. If the receipt doesn't include the word "demo" in the item description, it's not a demo to them.
