You're new here so maybe you don't know that that's not how it works here.

How did you come to the conclusion that "nobody" would buy it? You might be surprised to know that people have paid more than $15K for "just an amp".

This guys been listing that amp forever. Used to be $20K. If there were any Jaco fans out there willing to spend the dough then they would almost certainly be willing to do the detective work you mention also. Guess there aren't any though.

Because everybody finds out everything at the same time, right? Ask yourself, how many people "have" done the detective work? The obvious answer is... you don't know. You also don't know if any Jaco fans are trying to get the funds together to make an offer. You don't know what value a collector might put on it.

With all these unknowns...

aww gee....another "assumer".....man, i learned the hard way about doing that. :D

yeah, i doubt i would pay $15K for an amp, but i paid a very large sum of money for a piece of sports memorabilia a few years ago.....worth it to me.

I'm being "snippy?" You don't know the seller of the amp, but he's a "moron." I call you on it and I'm "snippy?" If I were the seller of the amp I'd be a bit more than "snippy." I really, and sincerly apologize to you if I actually did piss you off. I figured if you could go tossing around insulting names you'd be able to handle "I'm sure you would." Mr. Brad Johnson was much more diplomatic making the same points, point taken, I'll try to work on my tact. Please, you do the same.

Like it or not, or understand it or not, there is a market out there that only people with waaaaayyy too much money get to buy things that you and I would like to have. I own a 1958 Les Paul Special. A few years ago that same guitar (no breaks, original finish, original parts, original solder joints- in other words 100% stock, but not super clean) would have sold for less than $1000. I've been offered $5.5k for it. I've seen clean ones go for closer to $9k. Is it insane? Yes, it's a student model guitar. But look how much a 1959-1960 Les Paul Standard will run you. EASILY $80,000-150,000. Yes, $150,000, more than likely more than that now, at this point. A good sized house in a nice neighborhood. Early 50's Goldtops go for around $35,000. Those were under $10,000 around 10 years ago. These are things without having celebrity ownership. Care to have a guess how much Hendrix' Woodstock Strat was appraised at? Around 13 or so years ago Hendrix' 1955 black Les Paul Custom either sold for or was appraised at shy of $50,000. This was a long time ago, and a guitar that only a handful of pictures exist of him playing, now the guitar itself without Hendrix' ownership would fetch nearly that.

That's just old guitars, not old guitars owned by someone famous. People pay money for stuff they want, they'll pay more money for stuff they want more, people with more money pay much more money for stuff they want just so no one else can have it.

Ain't that the bottom line?

Wow... When I was in college in the late '70s/early '80s, I used to study the Guitar Trader catalog. Back then, '59 Sunbursts were something like $5000 each... Guess I should have scraped up the money to buy a couple...

The sad thing about this is that if Jaco had been a guitarist with the same stature and this was an auction for one of his guitar amps, it would probably sell for a lot more...

You know what's insane, is that clean double cut Les Paul Juniors are creeping up to $5,000. That was less than a $100 guitar when new. They're good for what they are, a non-intonatable (for the most part) one pickup student model guitar. A $5,000 collector's item?

Following that line, how about the Gibson Historic re-issues? While Fender's Custom shop stuff is around $2k, a 59 Reissue will run you $4k or so. Vintage stuff and Vintage-y stuff is pricey, never mind a celebrity owned piece.

$4K for a '59 RI... I just ran an inflation calculator and found that the $240 1959 dollars that it would have cost to buy a Les Paul Std in '59 would be equivalent to about $1450 2002 dollars (that's as far forward as the calculator would go).

Interestingly enough, Jaco's more famous amp, the Acoustic 360 (361 really), which listed for $1249 in 1970 would cost almost $6000 today.

If you look around hard enough, you actually might be able to find a Les Paul Standard for around that price, although they're usually around the $16-1700 range. But you should be able to find a Classic for a little less than $1400. The big difference in the Custom Shop price tag is the construction method and better hardware.
