A properly designed neck, using standard nut and fret locations, can sound beautiful if tuned correctly. Problem is, they are too often not tuned correctly, but are tuned by setting the open strings dead on pitch.
There is an inherent problem near the nut with guitars in particular. The transition from the solid strings to the wound strings is especially a problem. This has often been dealt with by simply detuning certain strings to make the open chords sound good. This is called "sweetening".
The BFTS and others, not only modify the nut, but also require careful tuning thereafter. No surprise that it sounds better. Just don't need a new nut.
