Buzzing Noise

Hi all, I'm new here.
(Sorry if this isn't categorised right.)
I started playing bass a couple of months ago and very quickly ran into an issue which (irritatingly but probably unsurprisingly) I haven't been able to fix.
When I fret notes close to the headstock/top of neck, the string will make the required note but then very rapidly fade off into an annoying buzzing noise. This happens no matter how hard I try to press (well, I can't press that hard but I try hard enough for it to hurt my fingers). It's very frustrating and I'd like to know if it's an issue with my technique, so I can sort it out before it becomes a habit, or if it's my bass.
I would really appreciate any advice you have!

It's likely a bass issue. The string is pressing down at the fret, then when it vibrates it's likely hitting the fret above it (above being higher in pitch, physically moving toward the body, not the headstock.)

A tech can make adjustments to the neck to relieve this. It's something you can learn to do but for a new player I would recommend taking the bass to a professional. And if the strings are old, have them put some new ones on when they make the neck adjustments. It will play like a whole new bass after that!
