Cab advice for a newbie

Well apparently this amp only supports Neutrik speaker cables, not 1/4 so I don't think I can connect it to this cab. Any ideas? Can an adapter be used?

Does it say that in the owners manual? I thought that most amps which use speak-on cables can also accept a 1/4" into the center of the connector on the amp. I know I can hook up my Markbass amp to my older 115 with a 1/4" cable and to my Ashdown 410 using speak-on... but I thought that was standard for amps. (At any rate, the speak-on is a much better/more reliable connection, so the adapter is still not a bad idea).

I got my adapter today and finally got to hear this amp though a cab. Its a whole different world compared to the Sunn combo. Im pretty sure I shook the entire shop building and my wall clock went fell down and shattered. Its not the prettiest cab in the world but this things can make mini earthquakes. Really liking the tone of this Orange as well.

This guy has this still listed on FB and he is down to $125 for it. I think that even though I just scored this 215, maybe I should scoop this Amp 410 up because that cheap. Maybe Ill like it better than this Hartke 215.

Be careful when you take advice from people.

Playing doom, thrash or death means you care- and thoughtlessly expose yourself to volume levels that some users here on the forum would react to by turning around and walking (running) from the room.
I know for sure that my 'loud' is not their 'loud' and I'd wager that your 'loud' is closer to mine than theirs.

Doing what you do with a 2x12 cabinet works, but only if you have some elite 212 super cabinet like a Barefaced twin and lots of power feeding it. I did play doom with an Aguilar GS 212 - which is not a bad cab at all - but it simply did not cut it. Not even close.
So if we're talking about regular cabinets, a good 410 is minimum but 215, 412, 610 or 810 are much better suited.

When you want to have a grindy, big low end, you need do move insane amounts of air. Especially when you tune down or use a 5 or 6 string. Set up against a hard hitting drummer and a guitar halfstack with 412, you need some capacity behind you. With not enough cabinet, the only safe bet is to Lemmy Kilmister it and simply dime everything except for bass and treble, which get turned off completely - but that won't really work with Orange amps as far as I know.

Im gunna play with this Hartke cab for a bit but I am really interested in 10s or 12s. I was chatting with the bass player from Crowbar and he says he doesn't really like 15s. So what I think Ill do is try to get my hands on a few different cabs and see what works well with this amp. Theres a blemished 610 Ampeg cab online for under $875 that I was eyeballing. I would assume that should get plenty loud?

The 610 is an HLF cab, not an HE and not at all like the 810 cabs. They're muddy sounding and weird IMO.

So I cleaned this cab up a bit and I'm leaning towards keeping it. For being an old, cheap, Hartke, this thing doesn't sound too shabby at all. Maybe I'll just keep my eyes peeled for something else that

pops up local and until then just jam with this guy.

Can’t beat free, and it looks like it’s in great shape now. I have no explanation for why, but I have generally preferred 15s. Looks like you’re in great shape now

Note: don’t ever go below the listed impedance. You can chain 2 8ohm cabs but don’t ever bring the impedance lower then 4. Always double check your ohm rating. If you buy a used cabinet and the rating is scrapped off don’t hook it up until you are 100% sure of that rating. You can purchase either 4 or 8 ohm cabs that will work perfectly for you. 8 ohm cab to 4 ohm amp =50% power usually. My amp is rated at 800 watts @ 4 ohm’s bridged. I have two 8 ohm cabs connected, the two 8ohm cabs connected = 4 ohm’s so I have matched impedance and get full power. if I go one 8ohm cab per channel I only get 50% power because each channel is running at 8ohm, the cabinet dictated what ohm the amp would run at. My amplifier is rated at 230 per side at 8ohms so I don’t get as much power connecting a 8ohm cab. Hopefully that helps a little. It’s not as confusing as you think.

That is a great cab. You will have to spend big bucks to find something better. I have gigged Hartke gear for many years. I never had an issue with any of their stuff. Only problem with that speaker is the weight. It will blow doors.

When I started reading this I was going to say get the Avitar 212. But this would stomp on the 212. Hartke gear also has an excellent sound.

So far I think its works great for what Im doing. Sounds much better than I thought it would. I don't gig so it just sits in my shop so the weight of it isn't a factor. I honestly thought it would weigh more than it does.
