Cab Sim vs Broughton HPF/LPF for going direct

Joyo has just announced the R-08 Cab Box. It looks similar to the mooer with more functions: xlr, midi. Price arounds 180$

Very cool! Didn’t know Joyo had entered the game too. That was quick.

The new IR modeling technology is pretty amazing. I didn’t expect much from the Mooer Radar. But it worked surprisingly well. Especially for recording. And even more so with some 3rd party IRs loaded into it.

Gotta love the DSP chip and the convolution technique. IRs are an idea that just works. So it’s no surprise the prices will continue to come down and the overall quality and features improve as it’s increasingly adopted.

Just picked up the Ampeg SCR-DI to add to the options pile. I still want to get my hands on a VT Bass DI, but I also needed a good small practice tool with headphones and an auxiliary input.

I’m pretty sure the tone hammer is going to stay on my main board with some effects. The sparrow will be mounted to a small cutting board along with a tuner pedal, and the cutting board will stay in my vehicle unless I decide I need to chop some vegetables LOL. The Ampeg will serve as a standalone unit for practice and Ampeg tones on the go when I don’t want to take a full pedalboard.

A quick note on IR cab sims… I didn’t know jack squat about any of that until this thread. Thanks for the info! I will definitely look into them.

Don’t mean to steal a thread... but if I create a thread to ask someone will say I should have used the search... and I did.

Here goes? How does an F-deck or HPF Pre differ from just a bass EQ pedal? I’m just trying to kill power using frequencies to squeeze as much spl from a small amp as possible.

The F-Deck HPF *is* a "bass EQ pedal."

"EQ" is a category of pedal.

"HPF" is a sub-category, or specific type of, EQ pedal. (Other sub-categories of EQ include graphic, shelving, parametric, LPF, etc.)

What is the make and model of your EQ pedal, please? One of us might be able to tell you if it includes an HPF circuit.

It has to do mainly with the type of filters and the curve of their response. Like the 2 in the middle of this pic. a graphic eq or parametric has more or a v or u shape to how they cut or boost frequencies. A shelving high or low boost or cut is more like the curve on the right of this pic and a high pass or low pass is a slope like on the very left of this picture. So while they can do essentially the same type of thing the sound and results are different due to the filter curves and other things like the filter circuit design and so on.

For what you describe a high pass or high and low pass would be your best bet to remove what you don’t won’t and leave the rest of your tone relatively untouched.

Just an update; the Sparrow (BDDI clone) DEFINITELY has some speaker sim going on. I used it with much better results, although my P had flats on it this time too. The sound was great. It nailed the Pino Voodoo vibe. If that’s the only sound I’d ever want, I’d be all set with that $50 box. Next time I’ll try the Ampeg SCR-DI and see how that compares. I also intend on giving the tone hammer another shot at it, this time with the AGS engaged.

I seem to remember @JimmyM mentioning that the SCR-DI also has a primitive sort of speaker sim going on but I think it’s just a fixed, always on LPF (even when the pedal is bypassed) that lops off highs? If so, you really have 3 options in hand to test out

For more info on the tone hammer, look up posts by user Eublet, at some point he uploaded graphs that showed the specific EQ curve that show how the cab sim changes relative to the gain knob when AGS is engaged. It might’ve been part of an amp thread tho...
