Cable decision: Planet waves, Canare, or Elixir?

I recently was sent the Elixir bass cable. It was way too "Hi-Fi" for me. It boosted the highs and lost the warmth on the low-mids.

Canare, Mogami, Monster, Planet Waves and Fender all have nice cables....

Now this is something I didn't know - cables affect your signal? Wow.

After reading this I was going to recommend Planet Wave cables since that's what I've been using - but after LowBSix's comment I don't know...:hmm:

There is no normal cable made that 'boosts' anything. If the lows get eaten or lost--which I've never experienced, personally--there is something terribly wrong with the cable. Buy the Live Wires at GC. They're guaranteed for life and work just fine.

I would have totally agreed with you until receiving one of these Elixir cables. The highs are drastically more audible than with my Canare cables, when using a passive bass. And though this is way unscientific, watching the signal on VU meters, it appears to be overall louder as well--meaning the lows and mids are not reduced (which would give the impression of increased highs).

I prefer the Canare cables with their flat (seeming), unhyped frequency response; but the Elixir would be great for a passive bass player who wanted more bright, cutting tone--it actually delivers.

I've seen it on a scope and can hear the difference. 2 friend/tone geek/guitards were able to go through a multitude of "high end" cables, because one is an executive at GC corporate, about 7 miles from my home. The other guy works on The Jay Leno show... They took all of the cables, with the same instrument and amplifier and were blown away.

They each came away stating that the "Studio Pro" cable by Monster was the best sounding guitar cable.

When I plugged the Elixir cable into my rig, all MESA with my LEJ, I found the high end to be annoying, so I changed over to the bass cable I received from Fender on the factory tour. I prefer the Fender over Monster, Mogami and Elixir... I have all three and there's a difference.

Perhaps, if you're not able to hear the difference, the rig may not reproduce the sound of the instrument and is possibly EQ'd too much...

Remember; this is IMHO...

You may wish to look around online and be sure to visit the 'Lava cable' site for a glance into the many different cables that are offered there. There are also some links at the bottom of the homepage you may wish to view. Thier offerings are first rate.
