Just scored myself a Cabronita on Reverb for $550. Had to switch out the pots, and while I was at it, I painted the pickguard with some metallic (sort of a brass/gold color) spray paint. Now, with the new pots and a proper setup, I love the way this thing looks, plays and sounds! and I can’t get over the awesome grain pattern in the headstock! I’m really starting to fall for this beauty.

Great job on the pg, could have sworn it was anodized aluminum. These Cabs are getting harder to find.

I'll play, my cab is my second favorite after my rick. Its strung with chromes and I prefer it to my regular P basses if thats legal to say on this site.

The recent activity here reminded me that I have a question about strings for my cab. I've got the TV Jones Thunderblade in it, and Labella DTFs 45-105. Overall I'm happy with the sound, except for the E string, which I find very dark and kind of lifeless (and different from the other strings, whose tonal range is much greater). I'm not looking for a bright set of flats overall, just something where the E isn't so much darker than the others and where you can get some growl by digging in, playing with a pick, etc. I've heard good things about the Fender 9050s, though the gauges don't quite match, which worries me because one thing I love about my Cab is that the setup is so perfect (good intonation, nice comfortable action, even sound all over the neck), and I'd hate to throw that out of whack.

So anyway, for those of you who use flats, what have you liked on your cab?

TI flats on all my basses. My Cabronita started life [obviously] w/ the OEM pickup, then swapped it out of a TV Jone ThunderBlade [neck position], and finally swapped again w/ the TV Jones ThunderBlade [bridge position, like the Fender Custom Shop]. The reason for the last pickup swap [from neck to bridge] was the additional output which I found was necessary to match the output of my other basses.

Never used LaBella DTFs, but the Fender flats sound and play nice. Not sure if another set of strings will fix your issue or not.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the huge, “Badass” style bridge looks out of place on the Cabronitas? I swapped mine out for a (slightly) smaller Gotoh hi-mass bridge, and although the difference is subtle, I think it looks Way better. I put the Badass bridge on my Troy Sanders Jaguar (which had a standard vintage Fender bridge) and it was a natural fit. Surprised they don’t come with them stock.

Yep, I'm with ya'! I went for an even smaller 2 saddle version. I think it helps balance out the hardware. Having said that, Both OEM & custom Cabronitas just look cool regardless.

Thanks for the kind words! Per usual, I have to give the color coordination aesthetic credit to @God's Favorite Bass who proved how matching [or contrasting] pick guards & knobs can sometimes bring out the best of these Cabronita's.

Speaking of which......your pick guard is acquiring a nice patina around the edge.

I actually did that myself with some darker copper metallic spraypaint.
