Cali76 only smaller?

The MXR M87 has the attack time range of the 1176 of less than 1mS. The larger Cali76 increased the attack range to 1.7mS. So the attack time of both units is still really quick on their slowest settings.
Thanks for explaining that Frank.
I can understand why that might be important in a compressor.
But in this one we have a wet/dry mix knob. Is a HPF really necessary with one of these?

The HPF in the side-chain circuit essentially raises the threshold setting for the low frequencies. Its purpose is very different from a dry blend control.

Is the SC HPF necessary? That is up to the user to determine. But many of the newer studio rack comps have the HPF in the side-chain along with the dry blend control so that there is more built-in control over the signal dynamics within that one piece of gear. Otherwise, to get the same results without those features, you would have to configure the comp with an EQ patched into the side-chain and externally mix a dry signal with the comp.

From the manual:

"One of the reasons why the original Origin pedals sound so good is that they deliver true FET compression, with a fast yet highly
musical response that is a world away from the brutal and unforgiving sound of traditional VCA compressor pedal designs."

A quality VCA has no sound of it's own and its distortion levels are usually far, far below any aural sensitivity for humans. VCA comp circuits can be made to be very sterile... more along the lines of "a wire with gain control". So I don't see them as brutal and unforgiving and they are usually very fast (see MXR M87 for an example of speed).

The way the 1176 uses the FET for gain control, along with the discrete class-A amplification, create nonlinear distortions within the audio signal that are revered for their sonic impression.

Here is a good article on the 1176 and how its distortions gives it its charm:

That is a good demo to show off the features, but they should get an actual bass player to do another one that involves more skillful playing on a variety of interments.

Eh, I'm about to order either way. Does anyone think it would make more sense to wait for them to show up at US dealers rather than pay the extra $40 shipping?

There's a guy selling one on Ebay for list price and he also has a Sliderig, but he's not a dealer.

He also has a Compact Deluxe. The Bass was sold as mentioned above.

Is it just me or has there been a flood of comps in the classifieds since this bad boy was announced!

I sold my Diamond comp since my compact bass cali should be here by early next week and this happens to be my one week off of gigs for the whole summer.. I had a Cali TX that I bought from Vintage king, but I had to downsize and sold it. I am super ecstatic about the compact series and hope it retains the awesomeness of its big bro.
