Calling Death Metal bassist

How do you handle very fast and complicated guitar riffs? Do you try to play exactly the same riff the guitarist plays? if it is not, what do you do?

Most but not all death metal bass lines are in unison. It sort of depends on the part, but most of the time I was playing with the guitar to add weight. There is a lot of variation to that these days. Bass players in tech death bands or groove metal bands are playing around the guitar more.
I do a little of both now. For verses I tend to stick to unison to give the vocals room. During choruses I might go for a walk.
