camping bass?

I need a bass that I can that can fit into backpack and also be very light. So was thinking for a long time and I think I know what im going to do. Im going to buy a short scale acoustic guitar then buy the lightest bass strings I can find and put them on the acoustic guitar. What im asking is if this will work. If you know please help.

Yeah, bad bad idea. Another worthy option is the Kala U-Bass, but even a full sized acoustic bass guitar will need amplification if you're playing with more than one acoustic guitar player. A battery operated Roland Cube bass amp is a good option.

It's 20" scale isn't it? Overall length is more.

How does it sound unplugged? Enough to practice with or will it at least need a headphone amp?

I stand corrected. You're correct; the scale is 20 inches. I actually haven't tried one but the U-Bass has a large following on TB. You can ask the folks in the U-Bass club.
