Can anyone ID this bass

Hi everybody. I happened on to this bass and the story I got from the owner was he had it and sold it to a friend for his son who played with a punk group, band broke up and he quit playing and sold it back to the owner after he thrashed it. He told me it was a 60's or 70's fender and though it does have whats left of what looks like a Tele Bass pickguard I kinda have my doubts. I bought it as a unnamed thrashed bass and not as a possible fender so I'm not out anything if it isnt. It plays real good and sounds good,the damage is mainly cosmetic. Considering P/J wasn't in the 60's or 70's, nor on Fenders (since recently, bleh), it looks like a trashed-to-shreds cheapie (starter) bass. Also looks like somebody removed the finish, added new knobs, and drew on it.

To each their own, though. I've heard people get better tone out of a $200 Ibanez than old guys with $4,000 Roscoe's.

My '78 Jbass started out like that.

Wished I'd taken some "before" pics.

Skaterpunks had thrashed the body to the max, but the neck was perfect.

Bought it for $300 in 1984, refinished it three times since then, still play it.

Yup. That headstock screams 90s "updated" fender to me. They downsized the headstocks on those special models (plus, lyte, deluxe, urge basses, etc).
