Interesting how when one string manufacturer (La Bella, I think ) says that one particular set of their strings is not recommended to be used string thru, how that turns into a common so-called "wisdom" that no flats should be used string thru.

Can Flats Go Through The Body?

Yes.
The E (especially) has to adequately handle the break angle without jamming up on the compressed windings and lifting the string at the witness point. .105"s rarely work. .100"s or smaller usually do. It also varies somewhat with brand and the geometry of the bass itself. The negative consequences also vary.
You can occasionally have this problem even with heavy rounds, thus strings like the 8250M set.
Getting the right strings is the toughest and most important parts challenge for bass. Strings aren't sexy, so people don't want to hear about it here.
I've used flats on string through's for years. Some are made for doing so and some aren't. As Jeff pointed out, if you take them off, they seem to kinda sound dead. But generally this practice won't be a problem.
