Can I damage the finish on my Ibanez with solvent based paint

Hi.
I posted this in the SoundGear Club as well, but since it's not specific to the model, I might as well ask a broader audience.

Also, I've seen the disclaimer about shielding questions going in the pickups / electronics forum. My specific question here is about the paint.

I'm planning on shielding my old SR905. The controls cavity comes painted (I assume from factory), but I don't think the pickup cavities are.

I'm not in the US, and the "luthier use intended" shielding paint and copper tape are quite pricey here.
Even more, the shielding paint comes in pretty big cans, to shield several instruments.
I can get a way cheaper presentation of shielding paint, but that is solvent based, not water based.

My question is, can I get a bad reaction from the bass finish or wood or anything, by using this solvent based paint?
I would be painting cavities, of course, and I would mask the finish. I just never painted anything on a bass, so I'm not sure what to expect.

I think the finish on the bass is Polyurethane, and I'm not even sure the cavities are finished at all.

I would mask the outer finish off using painter’s tape slightly bent over the edge to insure the finish is protected. Any finish in the cavity I wouldn’t be concerned with. Make sure the pickup cavity is grounding is electrically connected to the control cavity (and thus to the output jack ground).
