Not enough information to judge why his tone changed and what his initial tone and circumstance was. A bad sound guy will negate any decent tone.I recall a number of years ago there was this amazing Victor Wooten-like bass player around who played an entry level Ibanez through a solid state Peavey. All the people in our group agreed that the guy was great, but his tone was terrible. Fast forward a decade later and he's using hand-made instruments, and guess what...his tone is 100% improved. The point? Why even take a chance. Just splurge a little and get the good stuff. That's what I say, anyway.
Some of the iconic bass tones came from unplayable instruments. Funk machine anyone?
