Can it handle two 4x10 cabinets???

It'll only sound bad if he turns the master of the amp into clipping range. You have no concept of his volume needs to be able to assert whether it will sound bad or not. A 500 watt solid state amp will sound bad into a 8x10 if you turn it up into clipping too you know.

That's what I said... You can't damage drivers by underpowering. Reread my previous post...

All I am saying is that a 200 watt head is going to sound bad through an 810 because it's not enough power. I stand by that. The head is going to start clipping and it will sound like crap. Especially a budget head like the B200H.

It will work and sound fine. if you plug a 1000w amp into an 8x10 and you turn the master to 1, it is only giving a small fraction of the wattage (probably somewhere around 10 watts). It is only going to clip if they try to turn to the amp up louder than it can go (like putting a hot active bass in and diming the amp). The 8x10 works in their favor here. If he plugs the amp into a 1x10, they are going to need to turn the amp up more to make it the same volume (because an 8x10 is generally more efficient. More speaker surface area generally means more efficiency). If he used one 4x10 with the b200h, he may have to turn it to 7 to get the volume level he wants. With 2 4x10s he may only need to turn it to 5, making the amp less likely to clip.

The only time the amp is going to clip is when the amp is not loud enough and you turn the amp up too much. It has nothing to do with the speakers ( except maybe not having enough speakers to get the volume you want).

It doesn't matter if he has a 1x8 speaker or a 12x18 cabinet, the speaker cabinet is not going to cause the amp to clip. he is LESS LIKELY to clip with the 12x18 because of speaker efficiency so he doesn't need to turn the amp up as high to get the same volume.

So what did we learn here?

wattage required to power an 8x10 ?

watts > 0
(more than zero)

wattage to power pretty much any speaker cabinet?

watts > 0
(more than zero)

What causes an amp to clip?

turning the amp too loud, not the speaker cabinet.

couple things

... I have not used the new Acoustic stuff, only from the 70's, but my guess is that the quality of speakers in these budget cabs is probably leaving a little to be desired, and rated somewhat higher than actual capabilities ... so as johnk and Greenboy mentioned along with others, if somebody is willing to lug them around, it should only sound better than a single 410 ...

... point two would be that anyone who makes a blanket statement such as a 200 watt SS amp cannot sound good into an 810, needs to try a 400RB into a fridge ... I realize we are talking apples and oranges here, but blanket statements never seem to pan out completely

there it is.

i've seen guys rock SVT cabs with 100w GK heads and just kill it, plenty loud enough to hang with a rock band in clubs.

just because the cab can take a bunch more power doesn't mean it has to. if the given amp is loud enough through it to get the job done, all is well.

But no damage will occur. We all know this.

I think you guys are getting too caught up on nit-picking this kind of thing. If someone (especially a new bassist) posts a question like this, they are not only asking if it will "work" they are asking if it will work well. So, for the sake of being rational and practical, the answer should reflect such considerations.

It's like asking "Can you swallow a spoonful of broken glass??"

Well sure, you feasibly could. Is it a good idea? Of course not.

But, regardless, this should all be friendly, professional discussion. No need to get upset.

Yes it will work, and work well. Whether you subjectively like the tone of the Acoustic or not is one thing, but it will quite easily drive two 410s without clipping or doing anything "bad." I know this from both a scientific and firsthand perspective. Any 200 watt would have no problem doing that, and the b200h is pretty conservatively rated.

Okay, okay! I was wrong. My bad. Disregard. Abandon ship. Cease fire.

I was mistaken. Thanks for the explanation.

On a side note -

You guys sure get butt-hurt about this topic, don't you?:D

If you only knew how many threads started with an innocent question and good intentions in answering it, but ended in all-out flame wars and a bunch of hogwash getting tossed around for pages and page and pages. It's not that we're upset, we just KNOW what this subject means lol.

.........you are absolutely wrong about that. it'll actually clip less thru eight 10's than it will 4 of them.

Okay thanks guys!
So are you ABSOLUTELY sure that it will be just as loud with a 200w as a 500w or 600w?

... ummm, and where in this thread is anyone who knows anything making this statement?

Edit to add: ... and the best way to have anybody help is to have a profile filled out as completely as possible to be used as a reference for those answering the questions :)
