Can it handle two 4x10 cabinets???

So are you ABSOLUTELY sure that it will be just as loud with a 200w as a 500w or 600w?

So let me get this straight.

You need 500 watts to 600 watts of volume.

200 watts would not have been enough.

Had you tried to achieve this amount of volume, the amp would have been clipping and sounded bad.

IMO, you're still not getting it. let me put it this way. doubling an amp's speaker cone area increases its output SPL by +3db.

you have to double and amp's output (watts) to increase the SPL output by 3db (providing that the speakers can reproduce it). so a 200 watt head thru 8x10's will be the same volume as a 400 watt head thru 4x10's, and IME, doubling the cone area actually 'feels' louder, than doubling the watts.

yes.

you should drive by Schpector's house at 3 in the morning blasting both cabinets with all 200 watts and ask him if its loud enough.

otherwise his approach is a good one, with matching cabinets.
the only concern would be the Min ohm rating of the Amp.
Running 2 8ohm cabinets is 4ohms. so that is ok.
Running 2 4ohm cabinets is 2ohms that is not ok.
the head is only 4 ohm stable. you can run it at higher impedance like 8ohm but not below 4ohm.
Otherwise you can run 100 cabinets if you want. Just as long as they can be wired to present a 4ohm min load to the amp.

Confused yet....running more cabinets increases sensitivity, so yes it would take less watts to get to the same volume. By using more speakers.

Even 100 watts into a 8x10 works...how do I know...Ive done it and I play in loud bands too....it worked fine.

Not exactly. Doubling your WATTAGE generally gives you +3db, depending on the efficiency of your cabs. To double the OUTPUT of an amplifier you have to increase your wattage by a factor of ten. You're of course not guaranteed good results because your speakers have to be able to handle the power, and their efficiency will play a role as well. But doubling the SURFACE AREA of your speakers coupled with cutting the impedance in half, increasing the output of the amplifier, will usually give you approximately double the volume in db.

Um, no. There's a difference between doubling speaker area and still not having enough power to turn up to the volume you desire without clipping, and what you seemed to be inferring, which was that the head wouldn't have enough power to move all of the speakers.

Honestly, this thread should have ended after my reply right after the OP: The head can go down to four ohms. The cabs are eight ohms a piece. The head can safely operated with both cabinets connected. Period. (Yes, I'm aware of the irony of replying to this thread, and thus, perpetuating it. :p).
 
An 810 will be significantly louder with 1 watt, 10 watts, or 100 watts than a 110 will be.


IMO, this says everything you need to know to start thinking about this clearly (although I liked the ref to driving marshall guitar cabs with one of those cigarette pack amps - - similar concept).

The amp just cannot count the drivers in the cabinet(s). If impedance was stable across all frequencies, the amp would perform precisely the same into a single 8 ohm resistor as into 40 10 inch (or any other size) 8 ohm speakers wired in series parallel to yield an 8 ohm load (somebody stop me if I'm wrong).

With one watt, each 10 in an 810 cab will move less than a single ten would. But added together, the 8 10s will be much louder. If the basic theory holds, 8 10s at one watt should be as loud as 1 of those 10s at 8 watts.

But because real world speakers run into limits of excursion, the 810 at 100 watts will be lots louder than the 1 10 at 800 watts (assuming the 110 doesn't melt before you can measure the SPL).

But the amp won't feel any difference.
