Looks like they're counting the two-channel "internal loopback" inputs, along with 8 mic/instrument ins, 8 channel ADAT optical, and stereo S/PDIF.
Thanks. What's an 8 channel ADAT optical used for? Could you daisy chain two together to get 16 inputs running out of the single Firewire?

If you have another preamp or i/o box that uses the ADAT optical protocol, you could make use the Pro 40's optical input, effectively giving you 16 mic/line inputs total.
The Focusrite site claims that two Pro 40's can be linked together via firewire in "dual unit mode." That would bump you from 8 mic inputs to 16, while also doubling your coax S/PDIF and internal loop inputs. (If dual unit mode is working, that is. I thought I saw usergroup postings that dual linked isn't working yet, but I'm not certain about that; I don't own a Pro 40.)
