I talked to SSG.Derrick Reed and a very helpful SGT at the 113th band, I need a fake book, and I need to learn how to read music. What book can teach me how to read music, I need to be really good, like top notch, to pass the audition. I greatly appreciate all of your help.

I'd check out a teacher for that if you can afford it. Check out Western Kentucky or U K and see if they have someone in the Music Department that they can refer you to. If you're closer to Newport, KY and Cincinnati there are some great players that can help you out there too.
Good luck with all this.

I can't understand the logic of purposely trying out for something in a field you know nothing about (Jazz), assuming that you know absolutely nothing about it anyway.

Got to agree with this one. ..... Hopefully you can read, which 90% of the jazz band will be. ..... Think about this; if you've got this idea how many other studied, 'been reading and playing school jazz charts since grade 7, guys & gals are thinking the same thing. ...... Good luck.

Yep, up to Berklee, I was MI (M doesn't stand for musician!) and befriended a few Army musicians, great guys and really good players. Get lessons, you'll be able to do it be prepared. And practice your lessons for many hours a day. Military life is tough, a lot of practice won't kill you.

Good Luck! I don't regret my 7 years non-musical years in the army prepared me for the 25 years and going after.

That's not a guarantee either. Depending on the MOS you have when you enlist, they may or may not allow you to cross train. Be VERY careful if this is part of your plan - once you sign that contract, there are NO guarantees and they flat out own you.

Instead of starting a new thread. I wanted to keep this going.
I went to the recruiter today for my enlistment I took the ASVAB today and Wednesday I take my physical I'm almost in the Army, now comes the hard part, Im set for the military band audition, problem is instead of one song genre he wants the 5 listed. R&B, Funk, Swing Jazz, Latin, and now a 6th for rock, and 7th for country. Rock, R&B, and Funk are taken care of. Rock most likely a Metallica song or a Cream song. Country Im playing a simple line of Walk The Line, with a follow up of Green Grass and High Tides. I want to play Higher Ground because it sounds pretty funky and shows skill, need a swing jazz song so I'm trying to learn something like My Girl or other motown hits if they can be considered swing jazz (he did). Im at a lose for Latin. Please help I'm almost halfway there, I decided in two weeks to buy the Bass Tab White Pages. Thank you.

Quick side note. I now actually know how to read music, bass and treble. I studied quite a bit in band and my timpani part helped me out a whole lot. Another question I talked to the Liason today he wants me to know bass chords he said my sight reading will like reading a fake book with just the chord name. How does that work for bass?

Not My Girl - do Heatwave instead. That's a walking line, and you'll do better with that one. Blue Bossa is an easy bossa nova that would do you fine for your latin. That will give you what you need for an Army Band audition.

PM me if you have any other questions.
