Play a bunch of songs designed for guitar players to noodle over all in a blues format?.......This sounds like the most unfun band situation I've heard about in awhile....congrats for surviving that for 17 years....I wouldn't have lasted 17 minutes

So, my question is, what should I do. Here are the choices”
1. Take the issues to the band and hope that they will embrace my ideas and be willing to chance a few things to improve the band.
2. Keep my trap shut and learn to accept things the way they are, while gently pushing on the issues in a more subtle way, i.e. keep suggesting new songs of a non blues genre without explaining why.
3. Look for another band that is already doing the things I think should be done.
Thanks for listening and for your thoughts!
Every time I read about these posts I feel like I'm not even playing in the same music system as you guys.
Is it a US American thing that bands have a leader or is it worldwide?
I've never played on a band with a leader, although sometimes there are band members that come across "bossier" than others.
Most times people discuss things as peers and we either follow the majority rules, or we try to make a different (sub)group happier about any decision every time.
I've never played in a band where one person takes decisions regarding our music without the others' consent.
AND - you received similar advice in June with another post just like this one about this same band, same issues. If it's a rant, I totally get it. I welcome it, and actually love reading them! Sometimes they make me grateful for my own situation. Sometimes I see my situation. And sometimes I wish THOSE were MY [only] problems.
But, dude. This is eating you up. Make a change.
.....I'm right there with you. One band's motto that I was in was "everyone gets a ride (solo)"...Make my ride a cab, cause I'm out of there...............

Good points. I for one would be interested in getting some club owners' opinions about the band. You've provided an excellent analysis of your own impressions, but what are external measures of the band's "success" telling you? Obviously, Covid has impacted everything, but are bookings generally increasing or decreasing? Do you think you're losing gigs because of the band's one-pony repertoire? Are your audiences dwindling? Are your "regulars" showing up less often or seeming less engaged or enthusiastic?
I guess what I'm trying to figure out is whether the band's reputation is being affected by the shortcomings you mentioned or you're just becoming personally frustrated. If general interest in the band is decreasing, it might be time for a serious meeting with them about the marketing implications of their behavior. If you're feeling personal frustration, and playing with this group is not the joy it used to be, maybe it's time to move on.
Best of luck with whatever you decide.
Yeah, I had forgotten about that previous thread, and yeah, this probably is (only) a rant. THIS thread was spurred by one particular night in which all of those things became much more apparent, with the crowd basically all leaving after our second set. But, as much as it may sound like it, it's not really eating me up, either. I just think we are capable of doing better and it's frustrating that we don't....

To me the bass part in Tennessee Whiskey needs to be there, but the guitar parts do, too....It's probably a mixture of lazyness, creativity, and vanity. I think signature parts need to be their. Other parts can be varied quite a bit, but say a song like Tennessee Whiskey, at least that version needs that intro/hook....You might point out how wrong the bass part would sound on Tennessee Whiskey
if you didn't play that bass part and just made up something and stuck it in there....
I agree. I won't quit until or unless something better comes up....as much as you are frustrated by this group think how lucky you are to have regular gigs playing music. I would be careful to walk away unless or until you have other outlets available first....
Apparently we are one club owner's favorite band, and yet we have few bookings at his place, and the bookings we get are like the weekend after Fourth of July weekend or the weekend before Memorial Day. At another place we were the St. Patrick's Day band for years. Then we lost favor with them and never played there again. They have since changed hands and finally closed down due to Covid.Good points. I for one would be interested in getting some club owners' opinions about the band.
