The popcorn meme does serve a useful purpose when it comes to discussion forums. It's a very pointed cautionary comment that's saying the conversation is about to start heading in circles because both (or more) sides are digging in for a stalemate. It tends to defuse the situation by letting the people doubling down on their positions know that the rest of the community is starting to find their intransigence and bickering to be 'amusing.' It's about as friendly a way to say "This is not important - so will you all just drop it, please?" as there is.

A couple of other points…
- It's all well to conduct a poll of sorts on things like this. But it's also important to remember that this is a privately owned and operated web community. And the only people whose opinions on things like rules or direction for this community matter are the owner/operators. So when it comes to things like banning something, or creating a ruie, it's probably better sending a PM to the powers that be suggesting it rather than polling the membership about it. That's just showing good web etiquette.

Trying to cover such a clearly serious post with someone else's idea is just as bad as proposing a ban on free speech...
I am loving this thread. I had no idea there were so many good popcorn pictures!
