Can we talk about marijuana?

Lee, you are missing the main point. How many of these people do you personally know? The people that I have referenced are people that I absolutely know. I know how they act or react while sober and I can use that information to understand that the pot does not make them prone to violence. However there are other people I know that get out of control while drinking. You dont know any of these people... you have no clue if they are just violent people in general.
The main point that I originally made is that pot is not as big of a cause of violence as booze. However booze remains legal because of all of those wonderful dollars. May I add that you are employed by those dollars? Whens the last time a dry restaurant hired a security guard?

MJ5150.. I totally agree with you. Like I said before, I HATE impaired drivers. But I think that Simo was making the point that the driver as a person was at fault because he is the one that chose to drive the car while impaired so ultimately it was on him.
There have however been cases where someone was at fault in an accident but the other driver was impaired so they were found at fault instead. But thats just because there's an exception to everything.

Ahhhhh....I wasn't reading it from that angle. Thanks for clearing it up. I completely agree. The actual substance is not to blame, but the misues of it is. Makes sense to me.

Simo...if that was indeed what you were meaning, I'm with you 100%. My apologies if my post appeared to be inciting an argument.

you know, last night you kept posting, saying that you did not want to argue. What you really wanted was to state your point, have the last word, and not have anyone counter a weak argument... Now you are back making comments... so shall we start where you left off?

Last time I checked, it's a picture. All I really wanted to do was post the article, and I got sucked in to a crappy argument that I've already had on TB, and I don't wish to have it again. All you seem to want to do is argue with people. So no, I don't want to start where we left off.

Most areas of this debate I see shades of grey, but this bit is absolutely black and white.

By all means argue about what harmful impacts dope does or does not have. By all means argue about whether it makes sense for it to be illegal, particularly when alcohol is legal.

But I hope NOONE is disputing that someone getting stoned (or drunk or otherwise intoxicated), getting in a car, and killing someone is a problem.

Now as to the idea of an impaired driver... let me clarify my point there...It absolutely is the driver's fault. Since I know the family (small community), I am personally effected, and I think the death penalty is too good for the driver. I think 20 years in the electric chair is more appropriate

My thought behind it was that the idea of categorizing those who use marijuana and the effect really does more harm then good. If you spell out the effects. saying this ( insert hypothetical analogy here) is the effect of marijuana, you have to include people like the driver. If the effect is constant, then all smokers are prone to the same action. If you claim that everyone is effected differently, then trying to specify the symptoms is ineffectual and misleading

I know that most of you will never know me in person. I will give you a little insight into my world...
I voted in favor of CA prop 215 (the bill that allowed medicinal use of marijuana). Off the computer, I am what many of you would call a biker, and I make a living building bikes. I have seen more drug use then many people ever will. I am not opposed to marijuana, only to irresponsible behavior, and the blatant lies spread to promote marijuana decriminalization.. I do not smoke, anything, I rarely drink alcohol. My largest vice if coffee, and lots of it. That does not mean I care that someone else smokes... Just be straight up about it. Don''t lie, and be responsible

Interesting..you say you have had this argument on here, yet you claim that all I want to do is argue...
care to elaborate on your own tendency to argue?

I have never used marijuana, but I've been to plenty of concerts back in the day to know how it smells. With that being said, let me ask an honest question.....

Can you use marijuana and not get high? Sure I'll look up some info online, just wondering what you all have to say.

I will agree with you here. Weed affects people differently. It's like anything else ingested, from alcohol to pizza. As a bouncer, I imagine you can understand that, as you probably see different kinds of drunks at the bar, whether happy, sad, sleepy, aggressive etc. If a stoner tries to pick a fight with you, he would do it sober too, just like alcohol. I mean, I have never seen a calm guy get aggressive while drunk, nor have I seen an aggressive guy relax on alcohol.

I'll post once only....

MJ does not especially concern me. BTDT, never felt the need to do more. I consider it much less destructive and addictive than alcohol, which tears apart families, causes thousands of deaths directly and indirectly every year, and has done so for hundreds of years. Alcohol is a gateway drug to more alcohol - that's a very short drive, and it's a legal one.

If alcohol is legal, I see no reason not to legalize MJ. Addiction to any substance depends on the individual, but I am less concerned about the addictive effects of MJ than meth, oxycontin and all the other drugs used by people all around us.

I recently caught the band, that was playing that night, smoking in the back area... I told them to walk out front and hide behind my pickup (parked across the street). it is illegal to smoke on bar property, but so long as they were causing no trouble, I did not care... During their next break, I walked out front, and the bassist ( a friend) was sitting in the passenger seat of my pickup smoking... I cussed him for making my truck stink.

The turd got my bass out of the back seat, and had it up on stage with him for the next set

It's possible depending on how good (or bad) the stuff is and how long it has been since your last pow wow.

Of course, it also depends on what you consider high. Like alcohol there are levels of buzz. You can have a beer or two and be completely sober, or you can have eight and be completely trashed. Likewise, you can have a toke and just feel loose, or you can do bowl after bowl and be stoned out of your mind.

YES, I HAVE ARGUED THIS TOPIC BEFORE ON TALKBASS. And yes, I have tendency to argue about a topic I feel strongly about. But arguing on the internet is stupid and it gets nowhere. I don't enjoy it, and I try not to do it. You're only showing me further that you like to argue. Please stop. It's getting quite annoying.

I was just thinking out loud maybe that is part of the reason why there is apprehension to legalizing marijuana. I can drink a few beers and not be altered. Without any kind of regulation, it looks like the same can not be said about marijuana.

Another honest question for those in support of legalizing marijuana....are you in favor of production being regulated and standardized? My general sense for most is no.

you are doing the same thing as you did last night...I do not know what your compulsion to have the last word stems from, but it does not indicate that you are successful, righteous, or even that your point was accepted. You could have stayed out of this if you did not want to argue, but instead you posted a pic that was meant to insult and elicit a response. There was no reason to post what you did aside from insult or desire for a response. Then to try to the blame for the response you incited just showed a desire to manipulate others. ...
if you really want to stop, just do so. Don't post another thread referring to this, as you did last night, just step away from it

There's some truth to that. It is possible to have a bowl and get very high, and it's also possible to have a bowl or two and just get a little high. A lot of it comes down to the stuff and the person in question. So yes, your guess that some apprehension might be because of the uncertainty of how high one might get is definitely a possibility; but IME, the people who are against legalizing it aren't against it for this reason. It usually has to do with issues of morality and ethics.

As to your last question, I wouldn't mind it being regulated in a similar manner to the beer/alcohol industry.

In Australia, at least, alcohol kind of isn't standardised, in that I can buy wine or beer of different strengths. What is standardised is the amount you can drink and still drive, and all alcohol is labelled to tell you the strength.

Can dope be graded in the same way, and is there an effective measurement equivalent to blood alcohol measurement?

Haha, nice attempt to degrade my opinions just because I'm young and because all youth MUST believe they are right and everyone else is wrong.

I'd be the first person to tell you that drugs can have very negative consequences for some of its users. The key word, however, is some. Some personality and physiological types of people are predisposed to react negatively to drugs. Many other, however, can go about life as moderate users and turn out as right and normal as any non user.

If drugs have proven to be no benefit to you then so be it. For many others they can add something positive to their lives. The story that other TB'er told us in regards to his wife is one such example of how drugs can make things 'normal' for a person or family, even for just a brief moment in time.

Maybe you should reconsider the infinite amount of wisdom you've gained over the years and tinker with the idea that you might be wrong.

Only I'm not. Now I take this to mean that whatever you experience over the next 40 years will be insignificant compared to the deep understanding of life you already possess. I don't have any desire to degrade your opinions, but I have lived the length of your life, plus two more. The simple fact is that you don't have the same depth of experience as I do. If you believe that recreational drug use is beneficial to society in any way, you are just plain naive. I attribute that naiveté to your level of life experience. I mean this in the most loving way possible.
