Can we talk about marijuana?

Don't take this as sarcasm or get offended or anything; Personally I am interested to hear your view on the subject, please elaborate. I didn't think there was a person around who would rite off all drug use as "childish and stupid", infact to do so sounds quite childish and stupid in itself, but that is just my opinion. Like I said, I am interested to hear what you have to say.

I mean, I thought most adults drank coffee. They probably take painkillers when they need them to, as well as drink alcohol on occasion and in moderation, and some of them even smoke cigarettes. I'm sure you were taking about ILLEGAL drugs, however many people fail to realise that there is fundamentally no difference between the two aside from the legality.

trust me. you dont want to hear it. the last time i expressed my views on the drug culture, i got an infraction. i dont drink, i dont smoke, i dont take anything stronger than ibuprofen. no nyquil, no tussin, no opiates, no tylenol.

either way, im not getting into this. my views get threads closed and get me in trouble because this an incredibly drug tolerant forum. i want that changed, and im sure im not the only one.

regulation and taxation are foregone conclusions. The sooner smokers accept this, the sooner decriminalization processes will resume
It is commonly accepted that 2/3 of Americans do not use marijuana. That voting majority will not allow legalization without seeing personal gain. They have to reason to do that. If the smokers hold fast to zero regulation it will never be legalized, and the current group that are eating away at the current laws will take the privileged away one step at a time

Right now, In CA, smokers have to willingly give up their second amendment rights just to posses a prescription. They lose the right to posses, own, or transport firearms or ammunition just for having a prescription. That does not mean they have to use marijuana, just having that 215 recommendation on file constitutes an assumption of use.

You only have to obtain a recommendation from a physician to use marijuana for medical purposes. My doctor told me not to register with any govt agency. I keep a separate, hand signed recommendation in my wallet and have on three occasions successfully defended my right to possess my medicine in public. Using it is another story. You pretty much have to be on private property to smoke.

^^^ see, this makes a point I stated earlier.

I don't even know where to start with this, so we'll go from the top down.

the above poster (Simo98) is OBVIOUSLY someone who supports marijuana use, but does so using opinion instead of facts.

A perfect example is me stating that I have seen people smoke marijuana and become violent. The poster has no idea what I have seen, but calls it ridiculous. (I am trying to overlook the fact that in doing so is in a sense calling me a liar.)
Then he goes on to say that "normal pot smokers are at home on a couch, and not in bars

First things first, there are no facts unfortunately (not enough anyway), very little unbiased research has been performed on any illegal drugs, and so anything you read will be heavily slanted, one way or the other.

I am not trying to call you a liar, rather I said I believe exactly what you are saying and am simply trying to explain the behaviour. I said that the behaviour you described does not fit with the general consensus of what the effects of the drug in question are, and as such it doesn't make a lot of sense. The best explanation I can come up with is you are encountering a small and unusual demographic of pot smokers (who seem to also be moneyless drug dealing wife beating morons) and that your experience is not overall representative of the stoner population.

Here is the deal. He makes his own assessment of what he believes the "normal" smoker to be the standard by which he wants them judged. He bases his statement on what I have personally seen, as being ridiculous, on his own assessment. Which of course is the assessment of a pot smoker, and therefore subject to personal bias.

I do see where you are coming from here, however I certainly get the feeling that you are playing devils advocate in more ways than one. You said you have seen a fair amount of drug use, would you describe the people you have dealt with whilst working as "normal" pot smokers yourself?? Or do you want to avoid the question again? :D

In doing this he sets a standard of behavior for all "normal" pot smokers. If there is such a standard and all pot smokers act the same, then all smokers drive and do other things which endanger society while using drugs. If there is no standard of behavior, and people do act upon individual impulses when high, then his assessment of the normal pot smoker is in error, and he therefore cannot claim that my post was ridiculous without contradicting himself. It is either one way or another. Either there is a standard and typical way for all users to act, or it effects each person differently. You do not get to use one argument for one situation, and then change it to support your interests in another. Even by stating that a "normal" smoker acts in a certain way, you admit that there are those who are abnormal. That means that not everyone can be categorized, and therefore you cannot call behavior ridiculous until you have considered every single contingency

What you are doing here seems to be a prime example of a logical fallacy often referred to as a "false dichotomy", or the black and white fallacy.

You assume that either all pot smokers act exactly the same, or that they act completely different, and you say that for one to be true the other must be false.

Everyone is an individual, and things effect them differently, drugs are hugely prone to this, more so than anything else I can think of off the top of my head. However I am going to try and use an analogy to explain this, lets take sunlight for example; For some people it evokes a feeling of comfort, others find it intolerable. Some people's skin will burn red and peel, and others skin will turn brown. Unless you have some very strange medical condition, it's still gonna make you hot. There are many factors that influence how sunlight effects people, Genetics is one, the persons life experiences are another, and of course how that person happens to be feeling at the time has a big effect on what sunlight makes them feel.

The same with drugs. There are direct physical effects that effect everyone in a very similar way, and then there are thousands of other effects, especially the psychological effects, that can vary hugely dependent on the individual.

There are plenty of outliers and unusual effects, particularly behavioural effects that are going to vary hugely as the drug has an effect on peoples psyche, which is hugely different from person to person, however there is most certainly a "norm" and there are most certainly predictable effects from the drug, any drug.

Starting to make sense?

Then he goes on to say that marijuana is often mixed with other drugs...This was not something he should have said, at all. This is an admission that marijuana is a gateway drug to harder drugs. If he knows this, and other marijuana smokers know this, he has just stated that marijuana smokers knowingly indulge in the use of harder and more dangerous drugs. If his statement of "normal" behavior supports this, he further hurts the case for marijuana smokers, yet he goes on to say that he sees no validity to the theory that marijuana is a gateway drug. This is yet another contradiction in his own statements, that does nothing but hurt his claim when it is carefully considered

Alright, I really have no idea what you are trying to get to here? Did you even read my post? Do you want to address the actual points I made?

You think that just because some drug users also smoke Marijuana, that every who smokes weed will start doing other drugs?

I'm not sure how to respond to this, or how to point out how outrageous that logic is. Lets try this using the same logic: People who don't wear their seatbelt also probably drive cars. Therefore everyone who drives a car doesn't wear their seatbelt.

Furthermore, one person who admits to driving a car, said that other people who don't wear a seatbelt also drive cars. That makes it true!!

I could go on and on picking this apart, but it is pointless. I think I will give the kid the benefit of the doubt, and believe that he was under the influence when typing that...because the alternative is not encouraging

Hah, yeah, I am probably just too high to be a reasonable human being, you should probably just ignore everything I say and consider it "stoner babble" or something. :rollno:

But really, I read your other post about your views on marijuana, and it seems we pretty much agree. People can smoke what they want and so long as they are not hurting anyone directly other than themselves, they should be able to keep on doing it. It just so happens that this is my opinion when it comes to all other drugs, and probably everything else in the world.

PM me if you want.

My view on drugs comes from not only my personal experience, but also from people who I have talked to about drugs, for you to have such a strong opinion, you must have a very strong reason. I would be interested to hear yours, although I am not so sure you would be interested as to hear mine.

So do you, like, ferociously attack substances users the second they enter your field of view and are easily reachable? I, for one, would find that hilarious and worthy video tapping for a national TV show :D.

Surely that was to do with how you expressed your views, not the views themselves?

You joke, but there are certainly militant straight edgers out there. But we don't want to go around tarring with the same brush . . .

The deciding factor for me in choosing to make cannabis a part of my life was the discovery of the endocannabinoid system in our bodies. Dr Robert Melamede has done some great work in researching and making public this natural system

That's akin to justifying smoking tobacco because we have nicotinic receptors or steroid use because we produce hormones naturally or that heroin use is fine because we eat chilli's

The reason that any drug has an effect on the human body is because it interacts with a natural system within our body.

In closing, I have never read a scientific study showing negative effects from cannabis that has been able to have the results replicated in another study, and I have never read a study showing positive effects without finding other studies that back up the results.

At the very least you can find a lot of research published on the increase in lung & heart damage. While at the very least it is on a par with tobacco, there are also studies indicating the effects become present at younger ages than seen with tobacco use. The "no negative effects" claim is simply bogus.

(I will add that, as per my post on the first page, I'm neither for nor against weed, I don't smoke it, have no intention of, and I know some people who have wilted using it and some people that have been successful while using it).

Except the fact that the receptors that work with cannibus only work with it, nothing else. Unlike the nicotine receptors, whichever actually don't start to form until you smoke nicotine, and as far as steroids, those are chemically made in a lab. Far different then a plant that grows and you have to do nothing except ingest it to use it. Every other drug has to be manufactured.

I think the biggest thing to pull away is that smoking pot has very little affect on a persons personality, a d-bag will only be a stoned d-bag, a chilled out normal guy is just going to be a stoned chilled out normal guy. Sure, some people choose to really embrace it and become of what they represent, but that is a personal decision, not a side effect of the drug itself. And this is one of the biggest arguments I have for pot. It's really just a simple plant, that when smoked, vaped, or ingested, makes the user feel good (or bad, dependent on the user) for a few hours or so, then its over, and your back to who you were before you smoked. Like any good thing, it can be taken too far, I for one went through a period when I was smoking a metric butt load every day, and it did start to make me feel a bit more prone to fazing out and not really remembering things from just moments before at times, but never did it cause me to sink into a depression or anything like that. As soon as I really realized what was going on, I went ahead and flat-out quit for a month, with only the occasional pang of a jones striking, which I think could be expected from breaking any habit.

And I think the whole gateway drug thing is fairly bogus. I've done my fair share of experimenting, but I'd attribute that to just always being curious about things of the like. Like when I was a kid, sometimes when nobody was looking, I'd occasionally steal a sip of an adults beer or drink, and even before that a sip of my moms coffee, just out of curiosity. When I grew older and things became more readily available, I wanted to try those out too, and actually was smoking long before I ever even got a buzz from alcohol. I did eventually move on to other things, but only ever just sampling, never getting hooked, but I would in no way attribute the progression to my first rip off a pipe, or even that little sip off coffee as a kid, but to the inborn curiosity that I've always had, and that many other people share. I've known plenty off people on harder drugs who wouldn't touch pot, and much much more people who smoked pot but would never dream of touching anything else, including alcohol.

I think what I'm really getting at is that people put way to much emphasis on the pot itself, and not nearly enough attention into the individual. Making pot illegal is causing much more problems than the plant would on its own under an old unfounded law that really has no basis to stand on. I just hope that sooner than later people will give pot another chance, without all the pre-conceived notions of the Reefer Madness era, and take it for what it really is.

No, they only work with cannabinoids. That is a range of chemical compounds. There are cannabinoids which are already within the body that work with the system (endocannabinoids) and different cannabinoids, which also react with the system, come from plant sources.

Everyone has nicotinic receptors. With an increased intake of nicotine, the body produces more of them, which is where the addictive properties of nicotine comes from. That is quite a bit different from "not forming" until you smoke.

Steroids can come from a variety of sources. Many of which certainly aren't all produced in a lab. Heck, even things produced in a lab. Why does a chemical being man made, make it bad? Bad atoms in labs aye?

Agree with Shredder and others who drop the gateway claim, it is a bit of a backwards way of approaching it.

The only example I have of it being a gateway was where some dealers in my hometown got busted and it was discovered they had been cutting resin with heroin and moving kids from lumps of resin, to lumps mixed with heroin and then telling them X months down the line it was heroin they had been smoking. However, that's another story. I can understand why people smoke weed, but man, I never understood why anyone would want to touch resin.

IMO the reason marijuana use went down in the 80's is because of DARE. It took the stance that marijuana is a dangerous drug... The same as heroin, cocaine, and other more harmful drugs.

I work in medical setting and I can honestly say the from a medical standpoint, for every 1 person I have seen with marijuana related problems, I've seen 20-30 for opiate addiction. (in many cases prescribed opiates). Never seen a marijuana overdose, never seen anyone asking to detox from it, it just doesn't happen.

The most harmful by-products of marijuana are lack of motivation, respiratory problems from inhaling a burning material, weight gain for the "munchies", and odor problems.

When it comes down to comparing marijuana to pretty much any other recreational drug, it's just simply NOT AS harmful.

One a side note, I recently read a study suggesting that long term prescription opiate users can reduce their daily dosage my over half in some cases with minimal cannabis use.

So I guess my stance is... It IS NOT good for you, but compared to the alternatives, I could be WAY less harmful.

If everyone has nicotine receptors, why do you only get addicted after smoking for a little while? Our body does not naturally produce a chemical like that otherwise we would be craving it from birth. It does create canibinoid receptors from birth however, which is why it works so well with our body.

Because you produce more than your body has to begin with.

Nicotinic receptors are activated by the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. When someone starts smoking, they introduce nicotine to their system, nicotine also binds to the receptors. Your body reacts to this by producing more receptors.

Just as your endocanabinoids bind to canabinoid receptors. And consumption of cannabis introduces different canabinoids, which can also bind to the receptors.

Nicotinic receptors:
Activated by chemical A within the body, also activated by chemical B if introduced.

Canabinoid receptors:
Activated by chemical A within the body, also activated by chemical B if introduced.

I am in my late teens and I have smoked pot once, it was at an old band practice where we were all getting very stressed with the song we were playing at the time, it seems to me that it is as harmfull/less as a cigarette.

But one side effect is mental change, difference. Like highlighted above it is all upto the user, one of my band members was doing cocaine at that exact time and was completely fine for the rest of the time.

I recon the laws of marijuana should be the same or stronger as the laws surrounding alcohol and tobacco. Due to the change in mental state that is the main relapse of the drug.

There's my input nobody will read it though, hey look you are!

every time someone has a problem with something someone says, its regarded as trolling and moderators swoop in like the swat team to make sure no one gets upset.

Not true. As someone else pointed out, it's HOW you choose to express yourself that lands you in hot water, not your views.

theres nothing "adult" about drug use. its childish and stupid. im pretty sure talking about stealing cars or breaking into peoples' houses would get a thread closed. yet, drug use is TOTALLY okay. tired of seeing it. if im going to get infractions for words that arent censored, i dont want to have to see people talking about their illegal drug habits.

I'm sorry, please PM me and let me know which user forced you to click on the thread with the word Marijuana in the title. If you don't want to see anything to do with drugs (in this case, a legal one in some places), don't click on the link.

I missed this part before.

By drug use, I presume you mean illegal drug use?

It's an international forum, and while the use of some substances may be illegal in the US (heck, not even completelly illegal in all states), that isn't true for all countries.

If you ask me, it's pretty childish to compare stealing cars and robbery to smoking weed...

I think what he meant was we have open discussions about using a substance that is illegal in the USA according to federal law, but if someone started a thread about stealing cars or robbing peoples homes, that would not be allowed. I can see his point.

My view is: I do not see why it is still outlawed. Nobody watches "Reefer Madness" and actually believes that shinola any more.
Drunk people are way more dangerous than stoners. And it is so hypocritical that I can walk into any liquor store and buy enough alcohol to kill an entire generation of people.
And illegal or not, people still get their hands on it, but unfortunately they get it from criminals, which usually leads to violence in one form or another and lost tax dollars.
The war on drugs has been a complete failure.
